Tar Heels Travel to Darius Rucker Intercollegiate
March 5, 2020 | Women's Golf
CHAPEL HILL – The North Carolina women's golf team continues the 2020 season at the Darius Rucker Intercollegiate Friday through Sunday at the Long Cove Club's par-71, 6,266-yard Pete Dye Course in Hilton Head, S.C.
"The Pete Dye designed course at Long Cove is a great challenge for any golfer," head coach Jan Mann said. "The team will have to show a great deal of patience and be committed to their shots. The fairways are wide, but the way that Dye framed them when standing on the tee makes the shot appear tight. The greens are large, but with a good deal of undulation so it will be important for approach shots to be hit to the correct area of the green. In spite of the weather, the team has been able to prepare through practice and qualifying since returning from our previous tournament."
The Tar Heels' starting five include Brynn Walker, Jennifer Zhou, Kayla Smith, Mariana Ocano, and Krista Junkkari. Nicole Lu will be competing as an individual.
The ninth annual tournament begins Friday and Saturday at 8:30 a.m. and Sunday at 8 a.m. The Tar Heels will be facing off in the 17-team field, which includes 12 top-25 teams, headlined by No. 1 Texas.
"The field at the Darius Rucker Invitational is always very strong but we are up for the challenge," Mann said looking toward the weekend. "It is also wonderful to see our Carolina family at Long Cove, as Jim and Karen Ferree and Tommy and Anne Webster have been our host family each year that we have participated. We are all excited to be with them again this year."
In their most recent performance, the Tar Heels finished in a tie for fourth in the Moon Golf Invitational, including a top-10 performance from Brynn Walker. Returning for the ninth consecutive season, Carolina finished 17th at the 2019 Darius Rucker Intercollegiate. The Tar Heels are looking to improve on last year's performance.
The tournament begins on March 6 at 8:30 a.m.
