Top Moments Of 2019-20: Undefeated
April 8, 2020 | Women's Tennis
Here is the third dispatch in the series on GoHeels.com looking back at the top moments of the shortened 2019-20 North Carolina women's tennis season. When Carolina Athletics canceled all spring competitions in accordance with the ACC's decision on March 17 due to the global impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, North Carolina was in the midst of putting together perhaps the best season in program history. The Tar Heels were No. 1 in the national polls with a perfect 18-0 record, had already won team and singles ITA National Championships and sat atop the Atlantic Coast Conference standings. Please continue to visit GoHeels.com as we look back on the amazing accomplishments head coach Brian Kalbas and his program enjoyed this past season.
Ardent supporters know just how successful the program has been in recent seasons. National indoor titles, deep runs in the NCAA team, singles and doubles tournaments, numerous ACC Championships and a win percentage north of 90 percent have become the norm year in and year out. However, though shortened by the pandemic, 2020 will mark the first unbeaten season in Tar Heel women's tennis history.
Carolina cruised through what was supposed to be the "first half" of its dual season with an unblemished 18-0 record. The Heels wound up the only Division I program not to lose in 2020.
The 18 matches consisted of 11 victories over nationally-ranked opponents. Six came against top-10 foes, including on the road at No. 2 Florida State on Feb. 21, and back-to-back wins over No. 5 Duke and No. 4 UCLA in the semifinals and finals, respectively, at the ITA Indoor Team National Championship earlier that month.
The Tar Heels were a perfect 6-0 against the Atlantic Coast Conference, marking the fourth time in six years the team went through the conference schedule without a loss.
Though an asterisk may be placed next to the 2020 season due to it being unexpectedly cut short, the 1.000 winning percentage becomes the new program standard that tops the 2019 crew that won 94.3 percent of its matches with a 33-2 record.
