CHAPEL HILLÂ - North Carolina looks at "On This Day in Tar Heel History", as Tom Jensen shares his memories as an avid Tar Heel fan and regular at Boshamer Stadium.Â
May 19
For today's version of 'This Day in Recent Carolina Baseball History' we go back to 2007 and 2017 for a last day of the regular season double header to determine the Coastal Division title and an extra innings win over Duke to keep an undefeated string of ACC winning weekends intact. Plus quick hits from 2006, 2011, 2012, 2015, and 2018.
On May 19, 2007 the Heels came into the last day of the regular season in College Park with a half game lead over Virginia in the Coastal Division. The Hoos had a double header scheduled that day too at Boston College, so the only guaranteed way of clinching was to take care of business against the Terps.
The Heels set the tone pretty quickly in the first game. Reid Fronk hit a leadoff single and Dustin Ackley singled and stole 2nd to put a pair of runners in scoring position. Tim Federowicz drew a walk to load the bases.Â
Reid came in on a productive grounder by Josh Horton to make it 1-0. An error brought Dusty and Tim across to push it to 3-0. Tim Fedroff tripled to make it 4-0 and Chad Flack singled to make it 5-0 and just like that the Heels had a big lead before the top of the 1st was even over.Â
Alex White threw a scoreless 1st and in the 2nd the bats got right back to it. Reid Fronk hit a solo shot to lead off the inning and make it 6-0. Dustin Ackley singled and an error put runners on the corners. Josh Horton singled to bring in Dusty and make it 7-0, Kyle Seager singled to load the bases, and a Tim Fedroff FC brought another run around to give the Heels an 8-0 advantage.Â
Alex threw a 1-2-3 2nd and a scoreless 3rd. The Terps got a couple back in the 4th, but in the 5th Kyle Seager singled and moved to 2nd on a passed ball, a Tim Fedroff grounder moved him up to 3rd, and a Seth Williams double brought him home to get the lead back up to 9-2.
Maryland hit a solo shot in the 5th but Alex followed that up with a 1-2-3 6th and then Reid Fronk hit a solo shot of his own, his second of the game, in the 7th to make it 10-3.
Alex threw a scoreless 7th and ended his day with 7 strong innings where he struck out 7. Tim Federowicz hit a solo home run in the 8th to give the Heels an 11-3 lead before Maryland cut it back to 11-4 in the bottom of the 8th.
With 2 outs in the 9th Mike Cavasinni singled, Reid Fronk walked, and Garrett Gore singled to bring in Cavi and give the Heels their 12th and final run of the day.
BJ Dail threw a scoreless 9th to close out the 12-4 win. Meanwhile Virginia won the first game of their doubleheader in Boston...and the second game got cancelled. That meant if the Heels lost their second game of the day the division would end up tied and Virginia would come out ahead on the tiebreaker because they won the head to head series.
That made the stakes for the second game of the day for the Heels pretty clear- win and you're division champs, lose and you're not.
Reid Fronk again set the tone from the first at bat of the game. In the day's opener he'd gotten a hit to lead off the game and come around to score, then hit 2 home runs later in the game. For the second game of the day he combined those achievements into one- he went deep to right field to put the Heels up 1-0 after only three pitches.
Luke Putkonen was on the mound for the Heels and threw a scoreless 1st and 2nd. In the 3rd Garrett Gore reached on an error to lead off the inning and Tim Federowicz doubled to bring him home and make it 2-0. On the very next pitch Josh Horton hit a double of his own to bring Tim around and give the Heels a 3-0 lead.Â
Luke threw a scoreless 3rd, 4th, and 5th. He came out after giving up a couple of singles to lead off the 6th but he finished his day with 5 innings where he allowed 7 hits and 2 walks- not exactly unhittable- but also got outs when he needed them and only allowed Maryland to actually get 1 run across. He got the win to go to 7-1 on the season.
Tim Federowicz came on to finish the 6th and held the Terps to only 1 run. In the 7th Garrett Gore and Dustin Ackley singled on back to back pitches to lead off the inning. Tim Federowicz quickly changed back to the hitting part of his portfolio and doubled to bring Garrett home and make it 4-1. Josh Horton singled to score Dusty and make it 5-1, and a Chad Flack FC drove in Tim to push the lead to 6-1.
Tim switched back to pitching and threw a scoreless 7th and got the first out of the 8th, finishing his day on the mound with 2.1 scoreless innings. Andrew Carignan came on with runners on 1st and 2nd with 1 out and got a couple of fly outs to extinguish the threat.
The Terps got a couple runs in the 9th to cut their deficit to 6-3 and still had 2 runners on base with 1 out, bringing the tying run to the plate. But Andrew got a fly out and a foul out to leave the runners where they were and give the Heels a sweep of the double header, a sweep of the series, and the 2007 Coastal Division championship.
In the first game Reid Fronk had 3 hits, including a pair of home runs, and scored 3 times while driving in a pair. Kyle Seager also had 3 hits and scored twice. Josh Horton (including a home run and 3 RBI) and Dustin Ackley (including a couple runs) each had a pair of hits. Tim Fedroff tripled, drove in a couple runs, and scored one, Tim Federowicz singled and scored a couple runs, Chad Flack, Garrett Gore, and Seth Williams each singled and drove in a run, and Mike Cavasinni singled and scored a run.
In the second game Tim Federowicz had 3 hits, including a pair of doubles, and both drove in and scored 2 runs- while also having an effective relief appearance. Reid Fronk (including a home run), Josh Horton (including a double and a couple of RBI), Garrett Gore (including 2 runs), and Dustin Ackley (including a run) each had a pair of hits. Mike Cavasinni and Benji Johnson had the other hits for the Heels.
The wins gave the Heels a 45-11 overall record and a 21-9 record in ACC play to finish the regular season.
On May 19, 2017 the Heels were coming off losing the opener of their season closing series to Duke. The series didn't *really* matter. The Heels had already clinched the division and they were definitely going to be a national seed. But they had also won all 9 of their conference series to date, and it *WAS* Duke so that was extra incentive to want to keep that streak alive.
Things didn't start out great. Duke scored a run in the 1st and another in the 2nd to take a 2-0 lead. That concluded their scoring for the day. JB Bukauskas settled in and threw a 1-2-3 3rd.
In the bottom of the 3rd Brian Miller drew a 1 out walk and Logan Warmoth doubled on the next pitch to put runners on 2nd and 3rd. An Ashton McGee infield single brought Brian home and cut the deficit to 2-1.
JB threw a 1-2-3 4th. And a 1-2-3 5th with a pair of strikeouts. And a 1-2-3 6th. And a scoreless 7th. But the Heels went hitless from the 4th through 6th innings and the Devils continued to hold a 2-1 lead.
In the bottom of the 7th Michael Busch worked a full count and then hit a double to lead off the inning. Adam Pate pinch ran for him and got to 3rd on a wild pitch. Cody Roberts walked and Brian Miller hit a grounder to 2nd where Duke just had to settle for getting the force, allowing Adam to come home and score to tie the game at 2.
JB Bukauskas came out after 7 innings where he struck out 8 and allowed only 4 hits in his final regular season game at the Bosh. He finished his Carolina career with a 21-6 record and a 3.18 ERA with 294 strikeouts in 243.2 innings.
Josh Hiatt came on and threw a 1-2-3 8th. Duke hit a leadoff single in the 9th but Josh struck out the next 2 hitters and then got a FC to end the inning. In the 10th Duke got runners on 1st and 2nd with 2 down but Josh struck out the next hitter swinging to get to the bottom of the 10th.
The Heels hadn't had any hits in the 8th or 9th but in the 10th Logan Warmoth fell behind 0-2, took a ball, and singled to center to put a runner on to lead off the inning. Ashton McGee was up next and he fell behind 1-2, fouled off a pitch, and then hit a single of his own to left to put runners on the corners. The Devils intentionally walked Kyle Datres and the bases were loaded with nobody out.
The next batter hit into a FC that allowed Duke to get the lead runner at home, giving them a moment of hope. Tyler Lynn was up next and after falling behind 1-2 he fouled a pitch off and then hit the ball to short. Duke went home but Ashton McGee was safe ahead of the throw with the winning run to give the Heels the 3-2 win and the opportunity the next day to complete their perfect 10 ACC series, 10 ACC series wins record the next day.
Josh Hiatt got the win for 3 innings of shutout work where he struck out 4 and only allowed 1 hit. The win gave the Heels a 43-11 record overall and a 22-7 one in ACC play.Â
Logan Warmoth (including a double) and Ashton McGee (including an RBI and the game winning run) each had a pair of hits. Michael Busch had a double, leading to the first run, Brian Miller had a single and drove in and scored a run, Tyler Lynn had a single that made it 2 home ACC games in a row where he had a walkoff hit- the other being the afternoon the Heels finished the sweep against Clemson, and Zack Gahagan had a hit as well.
And quick hits from 2006, 2011, 2012, 2015, and 2018:
-In 2006 the Heels came into the second to last day of the regular season with a 1 game lead over Virginia in the Coastal Division and beat Boston College 5-2 to maintain their lead even as the Hoos beat Virginia Tech to keep pace.
Robert Woodard started and threw 4 innings where he allowed only 1 run on 3 hits. On the eve of his Senior Day Jonathan Hovis came in and threw 4 innings, striking out 4, and earning his 7th win of the season. He finished his senior year with an amazing 1.17 ERA, allowing only 47 hits in 69.1 innings.
Josh Horton led the way with 3 hits, including a double, and scored 2 runs. Jay Cox had a pair of hits and drove in a pair of runs. Reid Fronk doubled, drove in 2 runs and scored one, Mike Cavasinni doubled and scored a run, and Chad Flack doubled and drove in a run. Seth Williams singled and scored a run and Garrett Gore singled to round out the hitting.
Andrew Carignan needed just 8 pitches to throw a 1-2-3 9th and earn his 13th save of the season, setting the Heels up to win the Coastal if they could beat BC again the next day.
-In 2011 Virginia came to the Bosh ranked #1 in the country. The Heels meanwhile had lost 3 of their last 4 ACC series. A national seed and the opportunity to play at home until Omaha seemed pretty unlikely without a series win over the Hoos.
The weekend got started off right. UNC won 6-0. Patrick Johnson's last career regular season start at the Bosh was a masterpiece. He threw a complete game shutout, struck out 9, allowed only 4 hits, and didn't walk anybody. The win made his season record 10-1.Â
I've written before that I don't think Patrick's greatness is sufficiently appreciated- his senior year he went 13-2 with a 2.47 ERA, striking out 125 in 113 innings. You can stack that season up against virtually any in program history.
Coach Jesse Wierzbicki led the way for the Heels with 3 hits, including a run. Jacob Stallings (including a home run and a couple of runs), Tommy Coyle (including 2 RBI and a run), and Levi Michael (including a run) each had a pair of hits. Greg Holt also had a single and drove in a run.
-In 2012 the Heels completed a sweep of Virginia Tech, 6-2, thanks to the most dominant performance of Hobbs Johnson's career.Â
Hobbs may have had other starts he shone in where the stakes were higher, but this one was tops for pure dominance. He retired the first 22 Hokie hitters of the day, finally losing the perfect game with 1 out in the 8th. He ended up striking out 10 in 8 innings to push his record on the season to 6–1.Â
RC Orlan got the first couple outs in the 9th and Michael Morin retired the only batter he faced to close it out. The win made the Heels 12-0 against Virginia Tech since they joined the conference.Â
Jacob Stallings led the way with 3 hits on his Senior Day, including a double, scoring twice and driving in a run. Chaz Frank (including a double and a run), Colin Moran (including a run), and Cody Stubbs (including an RBI) each had a pair of hits. Tommy Coyle hit a home run and drove in a pair of runs in his last regular season home game as a Heel, Adam Griffin singled and drove in a pair of runs, and Michael Russell had a single for the Heels.
Mitch Trubisky was at the game and committed to UNC soon thereafter. He commented publicly that he was very impressed by the atmosphere and crowd support he'd seen at the baseball game and wanted to be a part of that athletic culture! So see, if we do a good job cheering on the Diamond Heels at the Bosh, we can help out the football program too!
-In 2015 the Heels were on the bubble for the NCAA Tournament and kicked off the ACC Tournament with a must win play in game against Virginia Tech. The Heels won 5-3 and lived to fight another day.Â
Zac Gallen started and got the win for 6.2 solid innings where he struck out 7 and allowed just a pair of runs. Trevor Kelley continued a season where he pitched most every day and was amazing most every day with 2.1 innings where he struck out 5 and allowed only a pair of hits to close it out and earn the save.
Alex Raburn led the way for the Heels with 3 hits, scoring a run. Landon Lassiter had a pair of doubles and scored a run and Korey Dunbar's pair of hits also included a double with him scoring a run. Adam Pate had a double and scored a run, Zack Gahagan, Logan Warmoth, and Eli Sutherland each singled and drove in a run, and Joe Dudek had a single to round out the Heels' hitting.
They moved onto the full bracket for the ACC Tournament and a guaranteed three more games to play with the win.
-And in 2018 the Heels completed the regular season with a 6-1 win over Virginia Tech, giving them the sweep and a 20-1 record against the Hokies at home since they joined the ACC.Â
Luca Dalatri made his return after missing most of the season and looked good, throwing 4 scoreless innings where he allowed only a couple of hits and a walk. Josh Hiatt got the win for 3.2 innings of work where he allowed just 1 hit and no walks. Brett Daniels struck out the side in the 9th on his Senior Day to close it out.Â
Michael Busch (including a double and 2 runs) and Kyle Datres (including a run) both had a pair of hits. Brandon Riley doubled and drove in a pair of runs and scored one and Ashton McGee singled and also drove in a pair of runs and scored one. Dallas Tessar had the other Heels hit, scoring a run.
