On May 28, 2017, freshman William Blumberg beat Mississippi State's Nuno Borges in Athens, Ga., to advance to the individual NCAA championship match. Earlier that same season, Blumberg was named the Most Outstanding Player of the NCAA team tournament in leading the Tar Heels to the NCAA championship match.

ATHENS, Ga. – North Carolina freshman William Blumberg made more program history on Sunday when he earned a spot in Monday's NCAA singles championship match. And as was the case in the NCAA team championship, it will be UNC vs. Virginia in a battle for the crown.
Blumberg advanced with a 6-2, 7-6(1) win over Mississippi State's Nuno Borges Sunday afternoon at the University of Georgia's Dan Magill Tennis Complex. He'll play Virginia senior Thai-Son Kwiatkowski on Monday.
"It's incredible," Blumberg said after his win. "I honestly couldn't have even dreamed of something like this. My game has just been clicking at the right time.
"I worked hard before this to get in shape and I've been feeling pretty good and doing pretty well. I'm honestly just really happy."
Blumberg, the Most Outstanding Player of the NCAA team tournament and the ITA National Rookie of the Year, imroved his record to 31-2 as a Tar Heel.
