This Day In Tar Heel Baseball History: May 3
May 3, 2020 | Baseball
CHAPEL HILL - North Carolina will begin to look at "On This Day in Tar Heel History", as Tom Jensen will share his memories as an avid Tar Heel fan and regular at Boshamer Stadium.
May 3
For today's version of 'This Day in Recent Carolina Baseball History' we go back to 2011 and 2016 for a game where the Heels got no hit for 6 innings but then still won 8-1 and for one where both the pitchers and the bats shined- including a rally where the Heels had 4 hits in a span of 5 pitches.
On May 3, 2011 the Heels hosted Gardner-Webb at the Bosh and had Chris Munnelly on the mound. He was dealing. He started the game with a strikeout on the way to a scoreless 1st. Then he threw a 1-2-3 2nd, a scoreless 3rd, and after getting in a little trouble with back to back hits to start the 4th retired the rest of the side in order to emerge unscathed.
The Bulldog pitching matched Chris for the first 3 innings but in the 4th the Heels got things going thanks to some aggressiveness on the bases. Levi Michael got hit with 1 out and with 2 down Coach Jesse Wierzbicki drew a walk. They attempted a double steal and the catcher threw the ball away, allowing Levi to score and give the Heels a 1-0 lead. They had the lead, but they still didn't have any hits.
Chris threw a scoreless 5th and struck out the first batter of the 6th before leaving the game after 5.1 scoreless innings where he struck out 5 and only allowed 4 hits and a walk. Tate Parrish got the last 2 outs of the 6th.
Andrew Smith came on for the 7th. He was a great relief pitcher his freshman year- 24 appearances, 2.77 ERA, 27 strikeouts in 26 innings. Unfortunately he got hurt and was only able to throw 2.1 innings combined the remaining 3 seasons of his career. Despite barely getting to play he stayed with the team all the way through his senior year and was a very supportive teammate, sometimes even traveling on his own to support the team on the road when he didn't make the 27 man travel roster. Smitty was a great Tar Heel and deserved a better fate.
This night was reflective of his contribution as a freshman though. With the Heels still only leading 1-0- and still having no hits- he struck out a pair of Bulldogs and got a fly out to end the inning and preserve the lead.
In the bottom of the 7th the Heels finally blew it open. Chaz Frank walked and Jacob Stallings singled to lead off the inning and put runners on the corners with nobody out. Tom Zengel singled to bring in Chaz and make it 2-0.
A single by Ben Bunting loaded the bases and after falling behind 1-2 Greg Holt singled to right to score Jacob and Tom and make it 4-0. Tommy Coyle followed with a walk to reload the bases.
That brought up Levi Michael and Levi wasted no time asserting himself- he drove the first pitch he saw out of the park to left for a grand slam that made it a 7 run inning and gave the Heels an 8-0 lead.
The Bulldogs got one back in the 8th but in the 9th the bullpen committee took care of business for the Heels. Cody Stiles got a groundout. Then Tim Brechbuehler came in and got a groundout. And then Garrett Davis came in...and got a groundout to close out a 1-2-3 9th and give the Heels an 8-1 win.
The Heels only had 6 hits- but fortunately they were all in one inning, allowing for the 7 run 7th that ensured the victory highlighted by Levi Michael's grand slam.
On May 3, 2016 the Heels were done with exams and playing their first game in a week. They didn't show any signs of rust. Jason Morgan had the start and threw a scoreless 1st, then followed it up with a 1-2-3 2nd.
In the bottom of the 2nd the Heels bats blew up. With 1 down Kyle Datres drew a walk and then Zack Gahagan worked one too. Cody Roberts singled in Kyle, Brian Miller doubled in Zack, and Adam Pate singled in Cody. 3-0.
Adam stole 2nd and Tyler Ramirez drew a walk to load the bases. A Logan Warmoth sac fly brought in Brian. 4-0. And then with 2 outs Brandon Riley doubled to right to bring in both Adam and Tyler and cap the 6 run inning.
Jason threw a scoreless 3rd and in the bottom half of the inning Kyle Datres doubled and Zack Gahagan walked, Cody Roberts bunted them into scoring position, and a Brian Miller grounder brought home Kyle to make it 7-0.
Jason threw a scoreless 4th, a 1-2-3 5th, and a scoreless 6th to close out his day. His final line was 6 shutout innings with 4 hits and a walk allowed. It's really too bad Jason had so much trouble with injuries during his Tar Heel career because he had a lot of outings where he was great, like this one.
In the bottom of the 6th the bats got going again. Cody Roberts and Brian Miller each singled to lead off the inning, Adam Pate bunted them over, and Tyler Ramirez singled to bring them both home and make it 9-0.
Hunter Williams came in for a 1-2-3 7th, and AJ Bogucki threw a scoreless 8th. In the bottom of the 8th the Heels got their final 2 runs thanks to a span of 5 batters in a row singling. Brian Miller and Tyler Lynn started by hitting them on back to back pitches, then Tyler Ramirez took one pitch before getting his to load the bases. Logan Warmoth hit his on the first pitch, making it 4 hits in 5 pitches for the Heels and bringing in Brian and Tyler to make it 11-0. Brandon Riley hit one too to close it out at 5 singles in a row.
Spencer Trayner threw a scoreless 9th to close it out. The quartet of Heels pitchers allowed only 5 hits and a pair of walks in their shutout effort.
Brian Miller had 3 hits, including a double, and scored 3 runs and drove in 2. Logan Warmoth (including 3 RBI), Brandon Riley (including a double and a pair of RBI), Tyler Ramirez (including a pair of RBI), Cody Roberts (including a couple runs), and Adam Pate all had a pair of hits as well. Kyle Datres' double rounded out the extra base hits for the Heels.
