May 4, 2020 | Baseball
CHAPEL HILL - North Carolina will begin to look at "On This Day in Tar Heel History", as Tom Jensen will share his memories as an avid Tar Heel fan and regular at Boshamer Stadium.
May 4
For today's version of 'This Day in Recent Carolina Baseball History' we go back to 2010 and 2012 for a career day for Mike Cavasinni and a dominant restart to ACC play thanks to Chaz Frank and Cody Stubbs after the exam break.
After a week off for exams the Heels hosted Elon on May 4, 2010 hoping to get off to a good start in their final push to get on the right side of the NCAA Tournament bubble. Patrick Johnson started for the Heels and threw a scoreless 1st.
With 2 outs in the bottom of the inning Levi Michael got things going with a single to center. He stole second and then Coach Jesse Wierzbicki worked a full count before drawing a walk. Brian Goodwin walked too and the Heels had the bases loaded. That brought up Dillon Hazlett and on the first pitch he saw he tripled down the right field line to clear the bases and give the Heels an early 3-0 lead.
Elon got one back in the 2nd but in the bottom of the inning the Heels rallied again. Seth Baldwin got hit by a pitch and then stole 2nd to start things and Ryan Graepel singled him in. Mike Cavasinni hit his first single of the day and Ben Bunting put down a bunt and beat it out for a hit to load the bases. That brought up Jesse Wierzbicki and he singled to bring in a pair of runs and make it 6-1.
Patrick threw a scoreless 3rd before the Phoenix got a couple runs in the 4th to make it 6-3. Colin Bates came on to get the final out of the inning.
Mike Cavasinni got his second hit of the day to lead off the 4th. Colin threw a 1-2-3 5th, allowed a run in the 6th to cut the lead to 6-4, and then closed out his day with a 1-2-3 7th. He ended up getting the win for going 3.1 innings while allowing only a couple of hits and a walk.
The game was still pretty close going to the bottom of the 7th but the Heels would rectify that over the last 2 frames.
Ben Bunting, Levi Michael, and Jesse Wierzbicki all singled to start the 7th, loading the bases. Brian Goodwin drew a walk to bring home a run and make it 7-4. Then Dillon Hazlett hit a sac fly to bring in another one and make it 8-4.
After another out the situation was runners on the corners with 2 down. Brett Knief singled to bring in another and make it 9-4, then stole 2nd. Ryan Graepel worked a walk to load the bases once again.
That brought up Mike Cavasinni and he delivered his third hit of the game with a single to left, scoring another pair and making it 11-4 after a 5 run inning.
Elon got a run in the top of the 8th. In the bottom Levi Michael reached on an error, Jesse Wierzbicki walked, and Brian Goodwin dropped down a bunt and beat it out for a single to load the bases with nobody out- the 4th different inning where the Heels had loaded the bases.
Chaz Frank singled to bring in a run and move everyone up a base and make it 12-5. A wild pitch brought in a run to make it 13-5 and with runners on 2nd and 3rd Ryan Graepel delivered the biggest blow of the day with a blast to left for a 3 run homer that made it 16-5.
But the Heels still were not done! Mike Cavasinni delivered his 4th hit of the day and a Josh Leemhuis double down the left field line brought him home to make 17-5.
Coach Bryant Gaines struck out the final hitter of the game to close out a 17-7 Heels win, giving them their 4th of what would grow to be an 8 game winning streak.
6 different Heels had multi hit games. Cavi led the way with his 4. Ryan Graepel (including a home run and 4 RBI), Dillon Hazlett (including a triple and 4 RBI), Jesse Wierzbicki (including 3 runs and 2 RBI), Levi Michael (including 3 runs), and Ben Bunting were the others. It was a strong start to the closing stretch.
On May 4, 2012 the Heels hosted Boston College in their first ACC game in 15 days. They made it clear pretty quickly that they were ready to be back on the field.
Kent Emanuel threw a scoreless 1st. Chaz Frank singled to lead off the bottom of the 1st, moved to 2nd on a bunt by Michael Russell, and came around to score on a ball hit by Colin Moran that the Eagle fielder couldn't handle.
Kent threw a scoreless 2nd. Brian Holberton singled to lead off the bottom of the inning, Adam Griffin reached on an error, and Parks Jordan bunted so effectively trying to move them over that he reached with a single to load the bases.
That brought up Chaz Frank, and he got his second big hit in as many innings- a triple down the right field line that brought everyone home and made it 4-0.
Michael Russell singled Chaz in on the very next pitch. 5-0. Colin Moran singled to put runners on the corners. Jacob Stallings singled to bring in Michael. 6-0.
That brought up Cody Stubbs with a couple runners on base. He knocked the first pitch he saw out of the ballpark to right center for a 3 run blast that made it an 8 run inning and gave the Heels a 9-0 lead.
Kent threw a 1-2-3 3rd. In the bottom the Heels were back for more. Chaz Frank drew a walk and Michael Russell reached on an error to put a couple runners on. Colin Moran doubled on the next pitch to bring in Chaz and Jacob Stallings followed that up with a grounder to score Michael and make it 11-0.
Kent threw a scoreless 4th. In the bottom Tommy Coyle walked and Brian Holberton singled to put a couple runners on base. A Parks Jordan grounder advanced both of them and Chaz Frank continued his monster day with a single to right and bring them both home and make it 13-0.
Kent threw a scoreless 5th. In the bottom of the inning Colin Moran got hit by a pitch and Jacob Stallings doubled to put them both in scoring position with nobody out. Cody Stubbs continued his own monster day by singling to bring them both in and make it 15-0.
The Heels scored in each of the first 5 innings- multiple runs in 4 of them- and shut out the Eagles over that stretch too. I guess they weren't too rusty from the exam break.
Kent threw a scoreless 6th and closed out his day with 6 shutout innings where he struck out 7.
Chris O'Brien came in for the 7th and threw a 1-2-3 inning, striking out the last batter he saw. The Eagles finally got a run in the 8th but then Cody Penny came in for the 9th and struck out the side to finish up a 15-1 Heels victory to start the series.
Chaz Frank led 3 Heels who had 3 hits. His day included a triple, 5 RBI, and 3 runs scored. Jacob Stallings (with a double, 2 RBI, and 2 runs scored), and Parks Jordan had 3 hits as well. Cody Stubbs led a trio of Heels who had a pair of hits. His day included a home run and 5 RBI. Colin Moran (including a double, 2 runs scored and an RBI) and Brian Holberton each had a pair of hits as well.
The Heels came into the game with a solid but perhaps by their standards not spectacular 13-8 ACC record. This win began a stretch of winning all their games for the rest of conference play.
