This Day In Tar Heel Baseball History: May 6
May 6, 2020 | Baseball
CHAPEL HILLÂ - North Carolina will begin to look at "On This Day in Tar Heel History", as Tom Jensen will share his memories as an avid Tar Heel fan and regular at Boshamer Stadium.Â
May 6
For today's version of 'This Day in Recent Carolina Baseball History' we go back to 2011 and 2012 for an incredible performance on the mound by Patrick Johnson against Maryland to kick off an ACC weekend and a great Hobbs Johnson start to complete a sweep against Boston College. Plus quick hits from 2008, 2014, and 2015.
When the Heels restarted ACC play after the exam break on May 6, 2011 they headed into the final stretch of the season needing a strong finish if they wanted to get on the right side of the national seed bubble.
Patrick Johnson was on the mound for the Heels, and he was on point. He threw a scoreless 1st with a strikeout. After allowing a 1 out single in the 2nd he struck out the last 2 hitters of the inning to leave him there. In the 3rd Maryland got guys on 1st and 2nd with 1 out and PJ struck out the next guy and then after a HBP loaded the bases with 2 down he just struck out the next guy after that too.
In the bottom of the 3rd the Heels struck for the first time thanks to some good long at bats and patience at the plate. With 2 outs Colin Moran worked a full count and drew a walk. Coach Jesse Wierzbicki was up next and he also worked a full count and drew a walk. Ben Bunting singled up the middle on the first pitch he saw, scoring Colin to give the Heels a 1-0 lead.
PJ struck out a couple more guys in the 4th on the way to another scoreless inning. In the bottom of the inning Tom Zengel hit a 1 out single and then with 2 outs Tommy Coyle doubled to put runners on 2nd and 3rd. Levi Michael then got hit by a pitch to load the bases.
That brought up Colin Moran. This is a good moment to take a step back and appreciate how awesome he was starting from day one his freshman year. He hit .335 for the season, had an OPS of .982, and drove in 71 runs with 20 doubles and 9 home runs over a 67 game season. All that added up to him winning National Freshman of the Year honors.
3 of those 71 RBI came right here on 1 of those 20 doubles. He hit one to left center that cleared the bases and gave the Heels a 4-0 lead.
PJ threw a scoreless 5th, striking out the last hitter of the inning. Then in the 6th he struck out the side. After a scoreless 7th with one final strikeout he finished his day with 7 scoreless innings, 12 strikeouts, and only 4 hits allowed. He ended up getting the win to push his record on the season to 8-1.
In the bottom of the 7th Colin Moran worked another walk, and Ben Bunting singled to put runners on the corners. The Terps tried to pick Ben off first...and instead threw the ball away, allowing Colin to come in and push the lead to 5-0.
R.C. Orlan came on for the 8th and threw a 1-2-3 inning, striking out a pair. He got the first out in the 9th before giving way to Shane Taylor who retired the last 2 hitters of the game on a total of 5 pitches to close it out. The bullpen retired all 6 Terps it faced after PJ's dominant first 7 innings.
The win gave the Heels a 4 game winning streak after a rough patch in late April. BeN Bunting had a pair of hits, Colin Moran walked 3 times in addition to his 3 run double, Tommy Coyle had a double, and Tom Zengel had the other Heels hit. Even though the Heels only had 5 hits, all of them resulted in a run in one way or another.
On May 6, 2012 the Heels hosted Boston College at the Bosh with the series already in hand, hoping they could make it a sweep. Hobbs Johnson had the ball for the Heels and started the day out with a 1-2-3 1st, striking out the last hitter of the inning. In the 2nd he struck out the first batter, but then the Eagles managed to load the bases with 1 out. No problem- Hobbs just struck out the next 2 guys to end the threat with no harm done.Â
In the bottom of the 2nd Cody Stubbs and Tommy Coyle each singled with 1 out and then with 2 down, Adam Griffin singled to right to score Cody and give the Heels a 1-0 lead.
Hobbs threw a scoreless 3rd and in the bottom half the Heels kept hitting. Chaz Frank hit a 1 out double and then Michael Russell followed with a double of his own, making it 2-0. Michael moved up to 3rd on a wild pitch and Colin Moran hit a fly ball to deep center field to bring him home and give the Heels a 3-0 advantage.
The Eagles got a solo home run in the 4th but in the bottom the Heels responded. With 2 outs Brian Holberton drew a walk, moved to 2nd on a wild pitch, and came around on an Adam Griffin single to make it 4-1.
Hobbs threw a scoreless 5th and then got the first out in the 6th before leaving the game. He finished his day with 5.1 innings where he struck out 7 and only allowed a pair of hits. He'd only joined the weekend rotation the month before- after barely pitching at all his freshman year- but his performances were definitely earning him the right to stay there.
Shane Taylor came in and got the last couple outs of the 6th, stranding runners on 1st and 2nd with a strikeout to end the inning.Â
R.C. Orlan came in- as he did in the majority of games in 2012- and threw a 1-2-3 7th and a scoreless 8th, striking out 3.
Michael Morin came in for the 9th and did what he pretty much always did, retiring the Eagles in order and striking out the last batter of the game to get the save for the second day in a row and for his 13th time of the season.
The sweep gave the Heels a 9-0 record at home against Boston College since they joined the ACC, a record that is now 17-0. Chaz Frank (including a double), Adam Griffin (including a pair of RBI), and Cody Stubbs each had multi hit games for the Heels. 8 of 9 starters for the Heels got at least one hit, a well balanced offensive attack.
And quick hits from 2008, 2014, and 2015:
-In 2008 the Heels beat North Florida 9-2 in their first game back out on the field in 9 days. Kyle Shelton led the way with 3 doubles, both driving in and scoring a pair of runs. Dustin Ackley also had 3 hits and a trio of other Heels all delivered a pair- Tim Fedroff (including a triple and 2 runs), Garrett Gore, and Tim Federowicz. Chad Flack also had a hit and drove in a pair of runs and Ryan Graepel had one and drove in a run and scored one.
Adam Warren got the win in the prearranged staff outing to push his record on the season to 7-1. 6 relievers combined to throw 6.2 scoreless innings- Rob Catapano threw 1.2, Matt Harvey threw 2, Tyler Trice got a couple outs, Brian Moran threw an inning, Rob Wooten got an out, and Coach Bryant Gaines threw a scoreless 9th with a pair of strikeouts to close it out. That's 4 future big league pitchers on a Tuesday night against North Florida if you're counting.
-Speaking of opposing teams having to deal with a lot of big league pitching on a Tuesday night, in 2014 the Heels beat Campbell 5-0 at the Bosh. Zac Gallen threw the first 6 scoreless innings, striking out 6, and only allowing 5 hits. After the Camels got to move on from him they then had to contend with Trevor Kelley for the rest of the game and he was even harder to hit- 3 innings and only 1 hit allowed to earn his first save of the season.
Michael Russell and Skye Bolt each had 3 hits to lead the offense, and both drove in and scored a run. Parks Jordan also had a pair of hits and drove in a run.
-In 2015 the Heels beat Elon 14-2 at the Bosh. Skye Bolt hit a home run, scored 3 times, and drove in a pair of runs to lead 5 guys who had multi hit games. The others were Joe Dudek (a pair of doubles, driving in 3 and scoring twice), Zack Gahagan (including a double and a pair of RBI's), Korey Dunbar and Tyler Ramirez. The Heels also got a triple from Brooks Kennedy, driving in a run.
Hunter Williams started and threw 2.2 scoreless innings. Trevor Kelley was next and went 1.1 scoreless to earn his 5th win of the season. Jason Morgan and Hansen Butler- who struck out a pair- each threw scoreless innings.
In the 9th the Heels brought in Chris McCue- who struck out both batters he faced- and then Trent Thornton who struck out the last batter of the game. That's a pretty tough duo to have to deal with at the end of a game where you're down by 12 runs!
