Aaron Sabato Selected 27th Overall in 2020 MLB Draft

CHAPEL HILL- With the 27th overall pick in the 2020 MLB draft, the Minnesota Twins selected sophomore slugger Aaron Sabato.

Sabato became the 24th Tar Heel taken in the first round or supplemental round in program history and the 16th in Mike Fox's 21 seasons as a head coach. The draft pick marks the 43rd straight season to see a Tar Heel be taken in the MLB Draft.

"We are all very happy for Aaron. He is a special talent and outstanding young man," said Head Coach Mike Fox. "He was not only a great player for us but a very good student as well. His future is bright."
In 83 games for the Tar Heels, Aaron has slashed .332/.459/.698 with 25 home runs.

Sabato, who was named a Second Team All-America by Collegiate Baseball Newspaper in 2020, helped guide North Carolina to a 12-7 finish this past season. The Rye Brook, N.Y. native smashed seven home runs in 2020, including six home runs in the final six games of the season. He ended his sophomore campaign batting .292, slugging .708, while drawing 22 walks.

On March 9, Sabato was named ACC Player of the Week after he finished the five-game slate with a .333 batting average and a 1.133 slugging percentage. He also collected four home runs in 15 at-bats.

Sabato turned in one of the best freshman seasons in program history in 2019, which included 18 home runs, a Carolina freshman-record.

The 2019 ACC Freshman of the Year led the team in batting average during conference play (.358) and was the first freshman to accomplish the feat since Colin Moran in 2011. He also led the team in batting average (.343), hits (79), doubles (25), home runs (18), RBI (63), total bases (160) and slugging percentage (.696). The freshman also led the team in multi-hit games (23) and multi-RBI games (17).

Sabato was named an All-American by Collegiate Baseball, Baseball America, Perfect Game and was the NCBWA National Freshman Hitter of the Year in 2019.
