Tar Heels Launch Voter Registration Push
September 1, 2020 | General, Student-Athlete Development
CHAPEL HILL – Each year, Tar Heel teams work together to perform well in competition and in the classroom. This fall they're working toward another goal: 100 percent voter registration.
Â
Student-athletes from UNC's 28 teams, as well as Department of Athletics staff members, are mounting a voter registration drive, with the goal of making sure that all UNC student-athletes and staff who are eligible to vote are registered to do so. (Roughly seven percent of Tar Heel student-athletes are international students, and another handful of them are not yet 18.)
Â
Each team's SAAC (Student-Athlete Advisory Council) representatives will help lead the charge, providing information and inspiration to teammates.
Â
"We want to do everything we can to encourage Carolina student-athletes and staff to be socially aware and involved as citizens and leaders,'' said athletic director Bubba Cunningham. "For the majority of our students, this is the first opportunity they will have to vote in a nation-wide election, and to experience the difference they can make in researching and voting for candidates in state and local elections, as well. We appreciate all the work being done by staff and students to provide education about issues and candidates, and help make sure their peers are registered."
Â
The effort is part of UNC's commitment to Educate, Engage and Empower. As part of those goals, Carolina Athletics pledges to encourage and facilitate student-athlete and staff registration and education as well as a commitment to follow through on voting.
Â
Early voting in North Carolina runs from Oct. 15 until Oct. 31, and Election Day is Nov. 3.
