CHAPEL HILL – Brianna Pinto's goal in the first half was enough to push the Tar Heels to 2-0-0 as North Carolina defeated Virginia Tech 1-0 Sunday afternoon at Dorrance Field.
"I am really happy to be 2-0. Virginia Tech is a really scrappy team and it is also nerve-wracking to play them," said Head Coach Anson Dorrance. "Coach Adair does a wonderful job organizing his team and putting a gritty squad out there. They are a really aggressive team and we could feel them while we were playing."
Pinto continued her pressure from the season-opener against the Hokies and netted her second goal of the season at the 14-minute mark. Freshman Sam Meza recorded her first assist of her career on the goal and the Tar Heels captured the only lead of the game.
"Virginia Tech always poses a tough threat and one of our points of emphasis was setting the tone early," said Pinto. "We pride ourselves on bringing the energy from the whistle and I thought we did that today. Personally, I wanted to win as many fifty-fifty balls as I could and I wanted give myself the best chance to score. I was just thankful to be able to put one away."
The Tar Heels had chances throughout the game and had a goal called back in the first half because of an offsides call but held the advantage at the break.
North Carolina pressed the entire match and ended with a 19-3 shot advantage.
Not only did Maycee Bell anchor the back line for the Tar Heels, she was able to put a shot on goal and attempt on two others.
The UNC defense was impressive throughout and allowed just three Virginia Tech shots. The Hokies were able to just put one shot on goal, which Dickey scooped up for her only save of the match.
Pinto led the Tar Heels with five total shots (four on goal) while Meza, Rachel Jones, and Isabel Cox each recorded a pair.
North Carolina returns to action Sunday (Sept. 27) at Duke. The match is set to begin at 3:30 p.m. on the ACC Network.
