Neglia Adds ACC Honor After Stellar Debut
September 30, 2020 | Cross Country
On the heels of a national honor, UNC freshman Sasha Neglia has been recognized by the Atlantic Coast Conference following her first collegiate race. The Tar Heel has been named ACC Cross Country Performer of the Week after her win at the Virginia Invite on Sept. 25. The honor was announced Wednesday by the league.
On Tuesday, Neglia became the first Tar Heel cross country student-athlete ever to be named NCAA Division I Women's Athlete of the Week by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA).
Neglia, who is from Kingsport, Tenn., opened her Carolina career with a win on Friday, leading the field to the finish at the Virginia Invite, her first collegiate competition. Racing at Panorama Farms in Charlottesville, Va., she covered the 5K course in 17:01.4. Her 5K time of 17:01.4 was 14 seconds faster than any other competitor and almost 19 seconds faster than the first non-Tar Heel runner.
She led the Tar Heel women to a team victory with 21 points, ahead of Virginia (38) and Wake Forest (77).
Virginia senior Rohann Asfaw was named Men's Performer of the Week and the Cavaliers' Wes Porter was named Men's Freshman of the Week.
The Tar Heels compete next on Oct. 7, racing in Cary, N.C., against NC State, Duke and Virginia.
