January 28, 2021 | Women's Soccer
CHAPEL HILL – Brianna Pinto, Maycee Bell, and Rachel Jones were each named to the 2021 Women's Missouri Athletic Club Hermann Trophy Watch List, an award given out to the top women's soccer student-athlete in the country.
A total of 54 student-athletes were named to the watch list, including the trio of Tar Heels. Atlanta Coast Conference members Florida State, Louisville, Duke, and Virginia each had representatives, including a pair from Florida State, but the Tar Heels led the way with a three honorees.
The No. 3 selection in the 2021 NWSL draft to Sky Blue FC, Brianna Pinto returns a wealth of experience to the Tar Heels roster. Pinto is a three-time member of the first team All-ACC list, earning the honor in each season she has competed for the Tar Heels. She established herself early on in her career and started in 25 of 26 matches as a freshman. During her time as a Tar Heel, Pinto has tallied 23 goals and 16 assists in 65 games, 64 of which she started. Pinto was a 2019 Hermann Trophy semifinalist and was one of five finalists for the 2019 U.S. Soccer Young Female Player of the Year award.
Bell, the 2019 ACC Freshman of the Year and 2020 First Team All-ACC member, has spent her first two seasons in Chapel Hill anchoring a backline that has consistently ranked as one of the best in the country. In the Fall of 2020, the Tar Heels surrendered just six goals, in large part to Bell's efforts. The Wichita, Kansas native started all 12 games and played over 1,000 minutes over the 12-game span.
Jones cemented herself as one of the premier players in the country during the fall slate. She was a First Team All-ACC Selection and started all 12 games. She scored five goals on 32 shots and earned her first brace of her career against Wake Forest in the season-opener on Sept. 17, 2020. She added to her season total against Clemson and Louisville, as well as in the ACC Championship against Florida State. The senior recorded four assists which ranked ninth in the ACC and 23rd nationally. Jones finished the season 3-3 on penalty kick attempts and was awarded Top Drawer Player of the Week on September 22, 2020.
North Carolina's attention turns to a spring slate that will include an NCAA Championship in May. Details regarding the Tar Heels spring schedule will be released soon.
