UNC Falls To No. 3 NC State 28-10

CHAPEL HILL –No. 14 North Carolina fell to No. 3 NC State, 28-10, Friday night in Carmichael Arena.
NC State started the scoring with a quick 5-0 lead in the team score as No. 4 Jakob Camacho posted a 21-4 tech fall win over Julian Tagg.
A top-15 matchup in the 133-pound bout, No. 11 Jaime Hernandez earned his first advantage of the match in the second period with a takedown to capture a 2-1 lead with just under 50 seconds over NC State's No. 14 Jarrett Trombley. Trombley earned an escape late in the second period and the wrestlers were tied at two to begin the third period. An escape early in the third period from Hernandez gave him a 3-2 lead with 1:20 to wrestle. He earned the 3-2 victory, putting Carolina on the board in the team score.
No. 10 Zach Sherman battled early in his 141-pound bout and began the second tied at three points with NC State's No. 11 Tariq Wilson. Wilson earned the only point of the second period with an escape and held a 4-3 advantage at the beginning of the third. Sherman tied up the match with an escape at the 1:32 mark and took the lead with a takedown with just over a minute to go, but a late Wilson double secured the victory for NC State at 141 pounds.
At 149 pounds, it took 20 seconds for top-ranked Austin O'Connor to score on NC State's Ed Scott after O'Connor scored a takedown, which proved to be a match theme. The North Carolina standout cruised to an 11-3 major decision. With the four team points, Carolina cut the NC State lead to one, 8-7.
No. 2 Hayden Hidlay provided the Wolfpack major momentum at 157 pounds, posting a 20-5 tech fall against Josh McClure. Hidlay surrendered the first takedown but used a fast-paced approach to finish with five team points for NC State.
No. 8 Kennedy Monday battled with No. 15 Thomas Bullard early at 165 pounds, but neither wrestler scored in the first period. Bullard earned the first point of the match with an escape early in the second period, but neither registered points again until Monday earned a point on an escape after a coaches challenge late in the third period. Monday scored late and earned a 4-2 decision in the top-15 bout at 165.
In a top-12 matchup at 174 pounds between UNC's No. 9 Devin Kane and NC State's No. 11 Daniel Bullard, the two battled early as Bullard claimed a 4-2 advantage at the end of the second period. After a third-period takedown from Bullard, Kane earned a reversal, but Bullard wrapped up a 6-4 victory.
North Carolina's Clay Lautt wrestled tough and held No. 4 Trent Hidlay to just four points through the first two periods in the 184-pound bout. The redshirt junior surrendered an additional point in the third period, falling in a 5-1 match to Hidlay.
At 197 pounds, No. 17 Isaac Trumble pinned UNC redshirt freshman Max Shaw with one second left in the second period which gave NC State a 25-10 lead heading into the final match.
To wrap up the night, NC State's Deonte Wilson notched a 3-1 decision over Andrew Gunning, finishing a 28-10 win for NC State.

The Tar Heels return to the mat tomorrow against Virginia Tech in Carmichael Arena at 3pm. There will be no general attendance and the match will be broadcast on ACC Network Extra.
