Pierce Goal Lifts Women's Soccer Past BC in Overtime
October 10, 2021 | Women's Soccer
First Career Goal Follows Late Tying Goal by Julia Dorsey
Julia Dorsey tied the game with 2:09 to play in regulation and Maggie Pierce scored her first career goal late in the first overtime to give No. 5 North Carolina a 2-1 women's soccer win at Boston College Sunday.
The win, Carolina's and head coach Anson Dorrance's 899th all-time, lifts UNC to 10-1-2 overall, 3-1-2 in Atlantic Coast Conference play. UNC is 5-0 on the road this season. The Eagles fell to 6-6-7-1, 0-6-0.
Pierce, a junior midfielder from Cary, N.C., gathered a loose ball outside the penalty area and blasted a shot that beat Eagle goalie Wiebke Willebrandt to the upper right corner for Carolina's third overtime victory of the season.
The Tar Heels are 3-0-2 in extra time, the most OT wins in a season since they won four in 2014.
Boston College took a 1-0 lead 4:20 into the second half when midfielder Sam Smith one-timed a shot from 12 yards out into the lower left corner of the goal after a cross from the right wing by Jenna Bike.
The Eagles' goal snapped a scoreless streak of 369 minutes and 53 seconds by the Carolina defense, dating back four games to September 26 against Virginia Tech.
Carolina tied the match when Dorsey, who made her first start of the season, tapped in the goal after a shot by Emily Moxley from the right side of the goal floated over Willebrandt, deflected off the cross bar and fell just in front of the net by the left post. The goal was also the first of Dorsey's career.
The Tar Heels outshot the Eagles, 15-11, and had twice as many corner kicks (8-4) in the game, but in the first half, BC outshot Carolina, 9-6 and had more quality scoring chances.
The Eagles best chances came within a minute of each other midway through the opening period. With 29:50 to play in the half Abby McNamara headed off a pass off the top of the cross bar. Less than a minute later UNC goalkeeper Claudia Dickey dove to her right to make a save of a shot by Smith.
UNC's best chance came in the first half off a corner, when Avery Patterson centered a ball in front of the goal as she was being knocked to the ground. Talia Dellaperuta took a shot from the six-yard box that was saved off the line by defender Eabha O'Mahony.
Dickey made three saves for UNC, while Willebrandt made two for Boston College.
Carolina played the entire game without starting center midfielder Sam Meza, and the second half and overtime minus Patterson, who was injured on that first-half fall. Patterson had been Carolina's Player of the Match in each of the previous three games and Meza had also won the award in two of UNC' first dozen games.
The win was Carolina's 10th straight over BC. The Tar Heels are 21-1 all-time against the Eagles, including 12-0 on the road.
The Tar Heels return to action Saturday, October 16 at NC State.
