Field Hockey Celebrates Senior Day Friday Against Louisville

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The North Carolina field hockey team will celebrate an outstanding class of seven seniors prior to Friday's Atlantic Coast Conference matchup with No. 4 Louisville. The final home game of the regular season is set for 4 p.m. at Karen Shelton Stadium with Senior Day ceremonies to begin at approximately 3:45.
Riley Fulmer, Hannah Griggs, Cassie Halpin, Abby Pitcairn, Meredith Sholder, Eva Smolenaars and Cassie Sumfest are set to be honored. As Tar Heels, the group has been part of three NCAA Championship teams (2018, 2019 and 2020) and four ACC Championship teams (2017, 2018, 2019, 2020).
Fulmer, a forward from Virginia Beach, Va., is working toward a double major in studio art and anthropology.
Halpin, a goalkeeper from Mohegan Lake, N.Y., is majoring in biology with a minor in chemistry.
Pitcairn, a midfielder from Pittsburgh, Pa., is majoring in biology with a minor in chemistry.
Griggs, a forward from Faversham, England, is majoring in exercise and sport science with a a minor in geography.
Smolenaars, a midfielder from Weert, the Netherlands, is majoring in media & journalism with a minor in coaching education.
Sholder, a midfielder from Alburtis, Pa., is majoring in biology with a chemistry minor.
Sumfest, a midfielder from Lewisburg, Pa., graduated in May with a degree in business administration and is now taking graduate courses at UNC.
No. 10 UNC comes into the game 9-5 overall and 3-1 in ACC play. The Cardinals are 13-2 overall and 4-0 in the ACC.
After Friday's game, the Tar Heels have just one regular-season game remaining, at Virginia on Oct. 29. The ACC Championship is set for Nov. 4, 5 and 7 at Syracuse.
Tar Heels vs. Cardinals
• UNC leads the series with Louisville 10-5. The Tar Heels have won the last two meetings, in March of 2021 and in November of 2020.
• UNC and Louisville met in the 2020 ACC Championship game, with Carolina winning 4-2 in Chapel Hill on Nov. 8 of last year. The top-seeded Cardinals led 2-0 at 18:53 into the game, but the Tar Heels scored the next four to take the win and claim their 23rd ACC title. UofL had more shots (16-10) and more corners (8-3) in that game.
• The Cardinals' 3-1 win over UNC on Oct. 2, 2020, in Louisville snapped a 47-game Tar Heel winning streak, the longest in ACC history.
• Prior to the 2020 loss at Louisville, the Tar Heels had won four games in a row in the series, dating back to a UL win on Oct. 14, 2017 in what was UNC's home game but was played at Duke's facility in Durham, N.C., during a season when Carolina didn't have a home field.
• UNC has won all four matchups played in Chapel Hill (2015, 2019 regular seasons, 2020 ACC Championship, spring 2021)
• Louisville out-cornered the Tar Heels in all three of last year's meetings, 4-2 in the win at Louisville, 8-3 in the ACC final and 10-5 in the March 2021 game in Chapel Hill.
