
Men's Golf Leads by Four at Williams Cup

David Ford 3rd, Austin Greaser 5th After 36 Holes
University of North Carolina junior Austin Greaser shot an opening-round 68 and freshman David Ford followed with a 67 in the afternoon round to lead the Tar Heels to a four-shot advantage over NC State after 36 holes in the first-ever Williams Cup presented by STITCH Golf Monday at Eagle Point Golf Club.
UNC is hosting the tournament to honor Roy Williams, who retired in April after 18 seasons as the Tar Heels' men's basketball coach, and his wife, Wanda.
The Tar Heels shot 5-under-par 283 in round one and 7-under 281 in the second round to take the overnight lead at 12 under.
NC State's 14-under-par 274 in the afternoon was the best team round of the day. At one point in the afternoon, the Wolfpack was 19 under and had tied the Tar Heels for the lead at minus 13. The Pack ended the day four shots back at 8 under.
Vanderbilt is third in the 10-team field at 4 under, Georgia is fourth at 3 under and Louisville is fifth at 1 over par.
Georgia's Trent Phillips is the individual leader at 11-under 133. He set Eagle Point's competitive course record with a bogey-free, 8-under 64 in the morning and posted 69 in round two.
The course record fell again in the second round when NC State's Maximilian Steinlechner went out in 7-under after seven holes and finished with a 9-under 63. Steinlechner began his round on the sixth hole and went birdie-eagle-birdie-birdie-par-birdie-birdie. He added four more birdies and two bogeys to finish at 63. He is two shots behind Phillips at 9-under 135.
Carolina's Ford and Louisville's Jiri Zuska are tied for third at 6-under 138. Ford made only one bogey in each round, opening with a 71 and shooting 5-under 67 over the second 18 holes.
Greaser is fifth at 5-under 139. His 68 in the first round featured six birdies in an eight-hole stretch on the back nine.
UNC's Peter Fountain is tied for 13th at 1 under and Dougie Ergood and Ryan Gerard are tied for 15th at even par.
Tar Heel senior Ryan Burnett, playing as an individual entry, shot 67 in the second round and is tied for seventh at 3 under. George McNeely, also an individual entry, shot a 3-under 69 in round two.
Michigan State's James Piot, the 2021 U.S. Amateur champion, is one of two players tied for 11th at 2-under 142.
Phillips' and Steinlechner's course-record performances broke the previous mark of 66 set by Francesco Molinari at Eagle Point in the PGA Tour's 2017 Wells Fargo Championship.
The third and final round of the Williams Cup is Tuesday, beginning at 8:30 a.m.
