Crawley, Morra Win ITA Regionals Singles Crowns

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The North Carolina women's tennis team added to its trophy case on the final day of the ITA Carolina Regional Championships. A day removed from winning both Main Draw Doubles titles, Tar Heel standouts Cameron Morra and Fiona Crawley were victorious in their respective Main Draw Singles championship matches on Monday morning.
Morra faced NC State's Jaeda Daniel in the Main Draw One final, and the two Triangle rivals battled for nearly three hours from the Wake Forest Tennis Center's outdoor courts. Morra entered the match on a roll having won her previous four matches in straight sets, but Daniel gained the early edge by taking the opening set, 6-4.
The Tar Heel senior from Rockville, Maryland, regained her form in the second set and went on to capture the final two sets, 7-5 and 6-4.
Morra, who previously won the same title in 2019, joins Sara Daavettila (2016, 2018) as the only two players in program history to win the regional singles crown on two occasions.
In the Main Draw Two final, top seed Crawley and No. 2 seed Ayana Akli of South Carolina went head-to-head in the adjacent court. Unlike the Morra-Daniel bout, this match was a one-sided affair with Crawley posting a 6-4, 6-4, win.
The victory allowed Crawley to exact a bit of revenge on Akli, who played at Maryland last season and took out Crawley in the opening round of the 2021 NCAA Singles Championship. It marked the first and only singles loss of Crawley's freshman campaign.
The San Antonio sophomore did not lose a set in her five matches this week and is now 45-3 in her collegiate career.
On Sunday, Carolina faced Duke in the finals of both Main Draw Doubles finals. Top seed Morra and freshman Carson Tanguilig cruised over eighth seed Karolina Berankova and Georgia Drummy, 6-0, 6-2. Meanwhile, No. 4 seed Crawley and Elizabeth Scotty were victorious in straight sets, 7-5, 6-2, over No. 3 seed Chloe Beck and Margaryta Bilokin.
All four players earn an invitation to the 2021 ITA National Fall Championships, held Nov. 4-7 at the Barnes Tennis Center in San Diego, Calif. Sophomore Reilly Tran will also compete in the singles field after qualifying earlier this fall by virtue of winning the Milwaukee Tennis Classic.
Morra and Crawley are the first Tar Heels to ever win the singles and doubles ITA regional titles in the same season.
Morra also moves into an exclusive club of only three Carolina players to win the ITA Carolina Regional doubles title twice. She previously won it back in 2018 playing alongside Makenna Jones. Kate Vialle did it in 2014 and 2015 and Jessie Aney in 2015 and 2017.
