Tar Heels Finish Regular Season 12-2-3
No. 7 North Carolina outshot Miami, 26-1, and converted four goals by four different players for a 4-0 women's soccer win over the Hurricanes Thursday evening at Cobb Stadium.
Carolina concludes regular-season play 12-2-3 overall and 5-2-3 in the Atlantic Coast Conference. Miami drops to 4-12, 1-9 in league play. The win was UNC's 11th straight over the Hurricanes.
The Tar Heels finished seventh in the ACC standings with 18 points, losing a tie-breaker with Wake Forest, whom Carolina did not play this season, for the sixth and final spot in the ACC Tournament.
Carolina is No. 4 in the nation in the RPI and No. 7 in the national rankings, but will rest until November 8 when the NCAA Tournament pairings are announced.
Midfielder Sam Meza gave Carolina a 1-0 lead as she collected a deflected shot inside the penalty area and beat Miami goalkeeper Melissa Dagenais to the lower left corner with 26:17 to play in the opening half.
Carolina struck twice in a span of 46 seconds early in the second half. Emily Colton scored her team-leading seventh goal of the season after passes from Isabel Cox and Emily Murphy. Cox attacked the Miami defense down the right wing, crossed the ball to Murphy, who slid a pass to her left to Colton, who finished from 10 yards.
Moments later, Avery Patterson dribbled into the left side of the box and turned a pass back to Murphy, who scored from close range. It was Murphy's fifth of the season and first since she returned from a three-game mid-season injury absence.
Talia Dellaperuta scored her first of the season, taking a pass across the face of the goal from Rachel Jones and scoring from just in front of the net with 7:47 remaining in the game.
The four goals marked Carolina's largest scoring output since defeating Florida, 7-1, in Gainesville on September 9.
The Tar Heels are 6-1 on the road this season.
UNC played without All-ACC center back Maycee Bell, who was injured one minute into last Sunday's double-overtime win over Notre Dame.
