Carolina Volleyball Signs Three to 2022 Class

CHAPEL HILL - Carolina volleyball head coach Joe Sagula and his staff are excited to announce the signing of three incoming players to National Letters of Intent: Carter "Liv" Mogridge, Anita Babic and Cadence Shea.

The three future Tar Heels are part of a Carolina signing class that is ranked No. 8 in the country by PrepVolleyball.com.

"I am so excited to bring in this class of 2022 to Chapel Hill this fall," Sagula said.

"Our coaches have all worked hard to find the right players and athletes who will be a great addition to our team culture both on and off the court. These three student-athletes are the first part of an incoming unit that comprise of a top-eight nationally ranked class that will have our program compete at the top of the ACC and at the national level for years ahead. We have a great balance in all positions that can provide the depth from high level setters and attackers along with outstanding ball control."

A four-year letterwinner, Liv Mogridge played her first two seasons at St. Thomas Aquinas High School before spending her junior and senior seasons as a middle blocker at Steinbrenner High School for coach Sabrina Shoemaker. A three-time first team all-county selection, Mogridge was recognized as an AAU All-American in June 2021 for the third time in her career.

As a sophomore, Mongride was named the 2019 Broward 7A-6A Volleyball Player of the Year, finishing the season with 320 kills, 25 blocks, 67 digs and 39 aces. In the club volleyball circuit, Mogridge played for the OT Clearwater 18 Chad team under coaches Chad Mercado and Julius Hasko.

Mogridge is ranked as the No. 29 player in the class of 2022.

"We are very fortunate to have an outdancing leader, and competitor with Liv Mogridge as a Tar Heel," Sagula said.

"She comes from a tradition of Tar Heel athletes in the family and we are delighted she continues that legacy in Chapel Hill. Liv is a versatile player. We see her adding both the power and size to our middle hitter position. She is a proven winner with her varied championship experiences at both the high school and club level. Liv knows how lead and how to win and will be a great addition to our team culture. I am confident Liv will have a great and immediate impact on our program."

A Lutz, Fla., native, Mogridge is the daughter of Jennifer and Allen Mogridge, both Carolina alumni, and has two younger sisters, Izzy and Lola. Her father, Allen, who was a four-year letterwinner on the Carolina football team from 1996-1999, is currently the offensive line coach/assistant head coach for the University of South Florida football team.

A four-year letterwinner at Corona Del Sol High School, Anita Babic is a setter for the Aztecs under coach Ben Maxfield. Ranked the No. 14 prospect in the class of 2022 by Prep Volleyball, Babic was also named to the 2021 ACVA All-America Watch List. As a freshman, Babic helped lead the Aztecs to a runner-up finish in the 2018 Arizona 6A State Championship game, before helping them make the semifinals as a sophomore. Babic also played club volleyball with the Arizona Storm Elite VBC 18 Thunder for coach Terri Spann.

"Anita Babic is a well-rounded player, and as a top ranked setter can run our offense at a high-level," Sagula said. "She is not only dedicated as a player but in the classroom as well. As a setter she trains at a high level in the west coast and is as a true student of the game. Her volleyball knowledge and vision will make an impact with her future teammates. Most importantly, Anita is a competitor who brings a winning mentality and will be a future leader for the Tar Heels."

A Tempe, Az., native, Babic is the daughter of Jelena Zarkovic and Darko Babic and has a brother, Viktor.

Position: Outside Hitter/Middle Blocker
Height: 6'1"
Hometown: Rocky River, Ohio
High School: St. Joseph Academy
Club Team: Academy Volleyball Cleveland

A four-year letterwinner, Shea played her first two seasons with at Magnificat High School for two seasons before spending the last two seasons at St. Joseph Academy. Shea is an outside hitter/middle hitter playing for coach Kate Latkovic. A 2021 OHSVCA All-Ohio selection, Shea was also chosen as part of the 2021 AVCA All-America Watch List and was named to PrepVolleyball's 2022 Top-150 rankings. As a junior, Shea tallied 94 kills, 15 aces, 35 digs and 12 blocks in 27 sets for the Jaguars. Shea also played the club team Academy Volleyball Cleveland under coach Meredith Rice.

Shea is the No. 100 ranked player in the class of 2022.

"Cadence Shea is an important piece to our outside hitter position and the future for our program," Sagula said.

"She is a versatile athlete who brings a lot of potential as a pin hitter along with the experience to play multiple positions. She brings a heavy arm as an outside hitter and can terminate on either pin along with her ability to run the slide. We see a great future for Cadence because of her athleticism, work-ethic, and volleyball IQ. We are excited to have Cadence in Chapel Hill and see her progress as an impact player in the ACC."

A Rocky River, Ohio, native, Shea is the daughter of Aaron and Caitlin Shea and has two siblings, Ireland and Kinzy. Father, Aaron, was a four-year letterwinner for the University of Michigan football team from 1995-1999, before playing in the NFL. Mother, Caitlin, was a four-year letterwinner on the Lehigh University soccer team from 1996-1999.
