Three Tar Heels Earn All-Region Honors

Three Tar Heel seniors have earned National Field Hockey Coaches Association All-South Region honors, as announced on Monday by the NFHCA. Forward Erin Matson and midfielder Cassie Sumfest were named to the first team and midfielder Meredith Sholder was named to the second team.

Matson, from Chadds Ford, Pa., led the nation with 27 goals and 64 points this season as she became the all-time goals leader in both program and Atlantic Coast Conference history. She was the ACC Offensive Player of the Year for the fourth year in a row and the ACC Tournament MVP for the second year.

Sumfest, from Lewisburg, Pa., earned All-ACC and All-ACC Tournament honors, and was recognized as the ACC Defensive Player of the Week on Oct. 19. She scored six goals this season, including the gamewinner in overtime in the ACC Tournament quarterfinals.

Sholder, from Alburtis, Pa., was named to the All-ACC Tournament Team and the All-ACC second team. She scored a goal and added three assists during the season.

The Tar Heels finished the season 13-7, winning the 24^th ACC Championship in program history.
