Carolina Drops Three-Set Match to Notre Dame

CHAPEL HILL – The Carolina volleyball team fell to Notre Dame in straight sets on Friday night in Carmichael Arena (22-25, 20-25, 21-25). The Heels (18-6, 7-6 ACC) struggled on the service line, committing nine service errors, while matching a season-high of eight reception errors.
Nia Parker-Robinson led the team with 11 kills, while Skyy Howard had a perfect attacking percentage on the night, adding four kills. Kaya Merkler contributed four total blocks, including a solo block, to go with eight kills and a service ace.
As a team, the Heels were out-hit .179 to .289, while tallying just 34 kills on the night.
Set One: Carolina: 22, Notre Dame: 25
The Heels never led in the first set, with Notre Dame out hitting Carolina .242 to .079. Carolina was able to cut the lead to 24-21, late, but the Irish took the set off a Tar Heel attack error. Kaya Merkler led the team with four kills in the set.
Set Two: Carolina: 20, Notre Dame: 25
The Heels started the second set off strong, going ahead 8-5 early. Carolina held onto the lead until Notre Dame got the equalizer off an attack error to make it 14 all. The Heels never held the lead again in the set, capping off the set two victory on a 7-2 run. The Irish out-hit Carolina .370 to .286. Amanda Phegley tallied a team-best three kills in the frame.
Set Three: Carolina: 21, Notre Dame: 25
Despite Carolina outhitting Notre Dame .300 to .297 in set three, Notre Dame outlasted the Heels in the final set. After giving up a small lead to the Irish, Carolina was able to get the set back to 15 all, before the Irish went ahead for good. Parker-Robinson had six kills in the set.
