SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Following its 2021 Atlantic Coast Conference Championship win on Sunday afternoon, the UNC field hockey team is set to make a record 38th appearance in the NCAA Tournament field, which was announced on Sunday evening. UNC will travel to Iowa City, Iowa, to face Northwestern in a first-round game on Friday.
The host Hawkeyes take on American in the other first-round game in the bracket. The winners meet Sunday for a trip to the final four in Ann Arbor, Mich.
"We're always thrilled to play in the NCAA Tournament and to represent the ACC as the conference champion," UNC coach Karen Shelton said. "It's an extremely challenging field and we know beating Northwestern will take our best effort. We're going to get some rest and then get to work preparing for a tough first-round battle in Iowa on Friday."
UNC is one of four ACC teams in the field, with Louisville, Syracuse and tournament runner-up Virginia all receiving at-large bids.
It will be Carolina's second trip of the fall to Iowa after starting the season there back in August at the ACC-Big Ten Challenge.
The Tar Heels are the three-time defending champions and are making their 19th consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance. UNC holds the NCAA records for tournament appearances (38), tournament games played (101) and tournament victories (73).
