December 13, 2021 | Field Hockey
North Carolina forward Erin Matson has been named the 2021 NCAA DI Player of the Year by Bolster Field Hockey.
Â
Matson, a senior from Chadds Ford, Pa., led the nation in 2021 with 27 goals (1.59 per game) and 64 points (3.76 per game). She tied for 12th in assists. Her points total is 15 ahead of any other player, despite having played in only 17 games due to an injury that sidelined her for three of Carolina's 20. Â
Â
No other player in the nation ranked in the top 20 in both goals and assists.

Â
It's the third year in a row that Matson has been recognized as National Player of the Year. As a sophomore in 2019, she won both the Honda Sport Award for Field Hockey and the NFHCA National Player of the Year Award. In June, following the extended 2020-21 season, she became the second Tar Heel ever to win field hockey's Honda Award twice and she also repeated as the NFHCA honoree.
