December 16, 2021 | Field Hockey
After winning the Honda Sport Award for field hockey in each of the past two seasons, Tar Heel forward Erin Matson is again a finalist for the honor.
Matson, the NCAA leader in goals and points during the 2021 season, recently was named to the DI All-America first team for the fourth time in her career. This season, she led UNC to its fifth consecutive Atlantic Coast Conference title and was named tournament MVP for the second year in a row after setting a tournament scoring record with 14 points over three games.
She recently was named DI National Player of the Year by Bolster Field Hockey and is a four-time ACC Offensive Player of the Year, just the second player to earn that honor four times.
She led the nation in scoring in 2021 with 27 goals (1.59 per game) and 64 points (3.76 per game). She missed three games with an injury but still finished a significant margin – four goals and 15 points – ahead of any other player.
During the 2021 season she became the all-time goals leader in ACC history and also became just the 13th player in DI field hockey history to total 100 career goals. She finished the season with 109 career goals, which ranks eighth all-time in the sport's history.
Following the extended 2020-21 season, Matson became just the second Tar Heel to win the Honda Award more than once during her Carolina career.
