Diving Continues To Thrive At ACC Championships

GREENSBORO, N.C. – North Carolina's diving teams shined once again on Thursday during the second day of the 2021 ACC Women's Championship from the Greensboro Aquatic Center.
Anton Down-Jenkins' school-record effort of 452.25 in the 3-meter event allowed him to capture a second gold medal in as many days after winning the 1-meter on Wednesday.
Alex Hart and Fabian Stepinski also produced personal-best scores in the 3-meter event. Hart's 412.35 gave him the bronze medal, while Stepinski's score of 391.40 placed him fifth.
A day removed from winning the 3-meter gold medal, freshman Aranza Vazquez finished second with a 322.55 score in Thursday's 1-meter diving final. Sophomore Paige Burrell set a new personal best with an outstanding score of 312.80 to earn the bronze. Burrell's score moves her into fifth in the Tar Heel record books.
Junior Grace Countie qualified for the A finals in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 22.20, the fourth fastest time in the prelims.
In the finals, Countie posted a career-best time of 22.08 to tie for fourth. It's the third fastest time ever for a Carolina swimmer in the event.
UNC finished sixth in the 200-yard freestyle relay with a time of 1:30.05.
The Tar Heel men top the team standings with 192 points, while the women are in seventh place in the women's team rankings with 244.5 points after eight events.
The third day of competition gets underway on Friday with prelims of the 100 butterfly, 400 IM, 200 freestyle, 100 breaststroke, 100 backstroke and women's platform diving beginning at 11 a.m.
The diving finals is slated for 2 p.m., while the swimming finals starts at 7 p.m. ACC Network Extra has coverage all day from Greensboro.
