Softball Downs Boston College on Opening Day

CHAPEL HILL – Highlighted by a three-run walk-off home run by Taylor Greene to wrap up opening day, North Carolina defeated Boston College in a pair of games at Anderson Stadium to begin the 2021 season.
Coming down to the seventh inning in game one tied 3-3, the Tar Heels plated four runs on four for the 7-3 win. A double play by Kayla Baptista, Skyler Brooks and Campbell Hutcherson clinched the first win of the season. Three Tar Heels had multi-hit games at the plate while Hannah George picked up the win.
Carolina's success continued into game two as Kiersten Licea set the tone early with a three-run home run in the first inning en route to the 11-2 win. BC hit a home run of its own, but two four-run innings for Carolina clinched the walk-off win in the sixth inning. Mirroring game one, three different Tar Heels tallied multi-hit games with Brittany Pickett striking out eight in the win.
Carolina resumes the ACC Pod weekend Saturday at 11 a.m. for a doubleheader against Syracuse.
Carolina 7, Boston College 3
» Destiny Middleton doubled down the left line to begin the 2021 season. Heads up base-running by Middleton allowed Thompson to reach safely. Burkhardt singled to left while Middleton capitalized on a Boston College miscue for the 1-0 lead.
» The Eagles responded as AJ Alatorre sent a sac-fly to left to knot the game at 1-1.
» Thompson battled through a 10-pitch at-bat and came away with an RBI-single to reclaim the lead, 2-1. Middleton capitalized on a BC miscue, upping Carolina's edge to two.
» Despite a standout play by Brooks to Hutcherson to begin the second, BC's Gianna Randazza sent a two-run homer to center that tied the game up at 3-3.
» After four scoreless innings, back-to-back singles by Middleton and Thompson, and a Burkhardt walk loaded the bases with no outs in the seventh. Licea laced an RBI-single to left for the lead before Lexi Godwin plated two runs on a ball to the pitcher for the 6-3 edge. Pickett made it 7-3 on a one-run double to right as Carsyn Snead crossed home.

» Carolina tacked on four runs in the fourth, upping the score to 7-2. A leadoff double by Hutcherson and a single by Bri Stubbs set up for Middleton's RBI-single to right. Thompson grounded out to second, but allowed Stubbs to score. Middleton stole home on Pickett's walk. Burkhardt capitalized on a Boston College error to score UNC's fourth run of the frame.

Aneshia Jordan pinch hit a single to right to begin the inning before Kristina Burkhardt doubled to left. Baptista plated UNC's eighth run on a groundout before Greene cleared the bases on her first collegiate home run for the walk-off win.
