Tar Heels Improve on Final Day of Palmetto Intercollegiate

KIAWAH ISLAND, S.C. – Improving one spot in the final round, North Carolina wrapped up its second tournament of the 2021 season Monday at the Palmetto Intercollegiate, finishing ninth at Turtle Point Golf Course in Kiawah Island, S.C.
Carolina, College of Charleston and Indiana finished their second round Monday morning before continuing to the third round where the Tar Heels posted their best round, firing 23-over-par 311.
Wake Forest won the Palmetto Intercollegiate shooting 10-over-par in the tournament to best Virginia in second place by 28 strokes.
Competing as an individual, junior Jennifer Zhou finished 13th, firing four birdies in the second and one in the third. Zhou shot 10-over-par through three rounds.
Freshman Natalia Aseguinolaza led Carolina on the weekend finishing 28th with the final two rounds of six-pver-par 78. In the second round, the freshman birdied the par-five, 501-yard 10th hole and fired 11 pars. Aseguinolaza birdied the 10th hole for the second consecutive day before wrapping up the tournament with a birdie on the 18th hole.
Freshman Nicole Adam improved seven shots from the second to third round to finish 43rd overall. The freshman matched her first round score with a five-over-par 77 in the final round. Adam fired three birdies in the final round and finished the back nine two-over-par.
In her first tournament, freshman Crista Izuzquiza birdied in every round at the Palmetto Intercollegiate. Izuzquiza fired six-over-par 78 in round two and 82 in the final round to finish 45th on the weekend.
Sophomore Kayla Smith steadily improved throughout the tournament, firing six-over-par 78 in the final round. Smith rebounded from an eight-over-par 80 second round, carding three birdies on the front nine Monday morning.
Sophomore Krista Junkkari mirrored Smith, improving each round at the Palmetto Intercollegiate. Junkkari fired seven-over-par 79 in the second round and six-over-par to wrap up the tournament. The sophomore carded three birdies Monday, finishing the tournament with a birdie on the par-four, 376-yard 18th hole.
Carolina returns to action Monday through Wednesday at the Gamecock Intercollegiate in Columbia, S.C.
