Adam Leads Tar Heels on Day One of Gamecock Intercollegiate

COLUMBIA, S.C. – Sitting in first place, freshman Nicole Adam leads the North Carolina women's golf team who is in sixth place as a team at the Gamecock Intercollegiate Monday in Columbia, South Carolina.
Tied with Wake Forest, the Tar Heels shot two-over-par 290 to finish the first round at Columbia Country Club's 6,297-yard, par 72 Tall Pines course in sixth place.
Starting on the 10th Hole, Adam was one-over through at the turn, yet steadied out to fire four birdies on the front nine. The freshman carded five birdies on the day to shoot three-under-par 69 in a six-way tie for first.
Junior Jennifer Zhou was even through her first nine holes with a birdie and bogie. Sitting in 20th of 96 participants, Zhou remained steady after the turn, totaling three birdies on the day to shoot even 72.
Sophomore Kayla Smith birdied the par-two, 135-yard 17th hole to finish the back-nine one under par. Smith birdied her final hole to fire two-over-par 74 on the day.
Although Krista Junkkari got off to a rocky start, the sophomore steadied out on the front nine to finish three-over-par 75. Junkkari birdied the 380-yard hole one and rounded out the day with eight-straight pars.
Freshman Natalia Aseguinolaza carded two birdies on the two longest holes of the course: the 476-yard third hole and 495-yard 15th hole. The freshman concluded the day six-over-par 78.
Making her debut this season, senior Ava Bergner fired three birdies, including one on the par-five, 495-yard 15th hole. Competing as an individual, Bergner fired three-over-par 75.
After the first round at Columbia Country Club, Duke is leading the Gamecock Intercollegiate with a first-round score of six-under-par 282.
Paired wth Mississippi State and Auburn, the Tar Heels continue with a shotgun start for the second round Tuesday at 9 a.m. Due to forecast inclement weather, teams will continue play Tuesday until 5:45 p.m. and resume the final round on Wednesday. Fans can follow live results on GolfStat.com.
