North Carolina Captures 4-1 Win Over Elon
February 23, 2021 | Baseball
CHAPEL HILL – North Carolina (4-0) remained undefeated with a 4-1 win over Elon (1-3) on a sunny Tuesday afternoon on Bryson Field at Boshamer Stadium.
The game remained scoreless through the first three innings, until Carolina's offense came alive in the fourth. With bases loaded in the bottom of the inning, Justice Thompson scored the first run of the game on a passed ball.
Returning to the top of the lineup in the fourth, Angel Zarate's single to left field allowed Tomas Frick and Brett Centracchio to score, giving the Tar Heels a 3-0 lead.
In the top of the sixth, Elon scored the team's first run on a double to right center. Centracchio launched an RBI double to give the Tar Heels a 4-1 lead to end the seventh.
Will Sandy recorded his first start and first win of the season, pitching 5.0 innings. Sandy only allowed one hit and struck out six batters. Nik Pry and Davis Palermo allowed a total of three hits and had eight strikeouts.

On 4-1 win…
The biggest thing for me is our pitching and our defense. Will Sandy threw a good five innings. Another starter to go five innings for us was huge and our bullpen walked none and struck out eight. We didn't make an error. I thought besides the ball that was hit over our right fielder's head that we didn't get in quick enough, I thought we were very good defensively. That was the story of the game, and then offensively we generated some runs. Thompson was able to push bunt to get us going, and then worked a good walk, and Brett (Centracchio) hit a double. Any win is a great win, but when you preach pitching and defense that's a really good win right there.

On first start of 2021…
It was a lot of fun. It feels good to be back out there and this team has a lot of fun. I'm excited to get the ball and go out there and get a win.
On settling into the game…
I think I settled in after the first. When I'm out there I just want to give my team a chance to win and that's what I was out there trying to do. After the first, I just kind of hit my groove and just started rolling.
