Licea, Pickett Homer in Doubleheader Split vs. Troy

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – Led by Kiersten Licea and Brittany Pickett at the plate, the Tar Heels rebounded from a 2-0 game one setback to defeat Troy, 8-2, in game two of the doubleheader at the Crimson Classic Friday afternoon in Tuscaloosa, Ala.
 
In addition to two home runs at the plate, Pickett anchored UNC in the circle, totaling 18 strikeouts in 11.2 innings. Pickett fanned eight in 4.2 innings in relief before retiring 11 in a complete-game win to improve to 4-0 on the season. Highlighted by her second home run of the season, Licea went 3-for-3 in game two with three RBI.
 
Troy's Leanna Johnson paced the Trojans to the 2-0 shutout in game one, as Carolina managed two hits in the game.
 
The Tar Heels return to Rhodes Stadium Saturday at noon for a doubleheader vs. No. 4 Alabama.
 
Troy 2, Carolina 0
» Carolina turned its second double play of the season in the first to keep the Trojans off the board.
» After reaching on a Troy error, Kayla Baptista stole second in the second, but was left on base.
» The Trojans scored two runs on back-to-back RBI-doubles in the third as Carolina made a pitching change.
» Shayla Thompson broke up the no hitter in the sixth with a single.
» Zoë Goodman drew a walk in the seventh before Alyssa Stanley singled to right, but it was not enough to complete the comeback.
» Starter Hannah George took the loss in 2.1 innings. Pickett struck out seven in 4.2 innings in relief.

» The Trojans jumped on the board first on Katie Webb's second RBI-double of the day.
» Carolina quickly responded by scoring three runs on four hits in the second. Licea reached on a hit-by-pitch before Pickett hit her first home run of the season for the 2-1 lead. Skyler Brooks doubled to left field to set up for a Bri Stubbs RBI-single.
» After two scoreless innings, the Tar Heels tacked on two runs for a 5-1 edge Licea slugged her second home run of the season for the four-run lead. Pickett singled before pinch runner Aneshia Jordan stole second. Baptista followed suit with a single but the pair was left on base.
» Troy tacked on a run in the fifth as Logan Calhoun crossed the plate on a wild pitch.
» The Trojans loaded the bases with no outs in the sixth but Pickett's 10th strikeout and steady defense kept Troy off the board in the frame.
» In the seventh, Licea plated her third RBI of the day before Pickett slugged her second two-run gone-ball for a six-run lead.
