Shutout Win Kicks Off Spring For Field Hockey
March 5, 2021 | Field Hockey
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Behind two goals from junior Erin Matson and an eight-save day from senior Amanda Hendry, the North Carolina field hockey team opened the spring portion of its schedule Friday afternoon with a 2-0 win over Louisville at Karen Shelton Stadium.
Playing under sunny skies, the Tar Heels improved to 11-1 overall, tacking on another win their 10-1 record from the fall. Louisville fell to 8-3.
"It's fun to play somebody else," UNC coach Karen Shelton said. "It's been a long preseason, and I think our kids have prepared really well. I love that we opened against Louisville, a well-coached and disciplined team."
UNC got the gamewinner just 1:30 into the action on its first penalty corner of the day. Matson had the goal, with assists from Paityn Wirth and Madison Orobono.
The Tar Heels added another in the second quarter. The goal again started with a penalty corner opportunity, but this time the insert went outside the circle and was passed around to the right side before Meredith Sholder sent a cross to the front of the cage, where Matson got a stick on it for a 2-0 lead.
Louisville totaled 16 shots to UNC's 14, including seven in the third quarter alone, when Hendry made four of her saves. The Cardinals also out-cornered the Tar Heels, 10-5.
"Playing somebody like Louisville in the first game of the season only makes us better because it points out our weaknesses," Shelton said. "We'll go back to the drawing board, back to the practice field and see if we can't make progress for next week."
UNC returns to action on March 13 at Wake Forest. Game time at Kentner Stadium is noon.
