Baseball Drops 6-4 Contest To No. 24 Virginia Tech

BLACKSBURG, Va. – Three Tar Heels turned multi-hit performances in a 6-4 loss to No. 24 Virginia Tech (7-1, 4-1) on Saturday evening.
Angel Zarate, Justice Thompson, and Max Troiani each recorded two hits in the game two loss to the Hokies. It was Troiani's first multi-hit game of his career.
It didn't take long for North Carolina's offense to get going when Tomas Frick smacked an RBI single to left field to score Zarate, who extended his on-base streak to 28 games with a leadoff base hit.
Virginia Tech tied up the game at one run in the bottom of the second inning with a solo home run before Thompson reclaimed the Tar Heels' lead with his own solo shot, a home run that cleared the center-field wall.
The Hokies answered with a two-run third inning to take a 3-2 lead after three frames.
After poking a single to left field in the fourth inning, Troiani advanced to second on a wild pitch. Two batters later, Zarate plated Troiani with a single to center field which tied the contest at three runs.
Carolina loaded the bases in the fifth after two walks and an error but stranded all three runners.
The Hokies took back the lead in the bottom of the sixth with a sacrifice fly. The run tilted the score to 4-3, in favor of Virginia Tech. Virginia Tech scored two more in the sixth with a two-out RBI single and held a 6-3 lead after six frames.
The fifth official review of the game came in the eighth inning when the replay umpire took a second look at a fielder's choice play where Zarate was called safe. The call was confirmed on the field and Zarate eventually scored on an RBI single from Justice Thompson. The run cut the Virginia Tech lead to two, 6-4.
Thompson put his defense on display in the bottom of the eight when he reached over the center-field wall to rob a home run.
The Tar Heels could not piece anything together in the ninth and fell 6-3.
Max Carlson started the game for the Tar Heels on the mound and turned in 5.0 innings, which yielded three hits, three runs, four strikeouts, and six walks.
Joey Lancellotti finished the game on the bump and threw the final three innings and surrendered three earned runs.
The Tar Heels look to avoid the sweep tomorrow at 1 p.m.
