ACC's Offensive Player of the Week? It's Matson Again
April 20, 2021 | Field Hockey
GREENSBORO, N.C. – For the sixth and final time of the season, North Carolina junior Erin Matson has been named Atlantic Coast Conference Field Hockey Offensive Player of the Week. It's the final week of ACC awards in an anything-but-regular season that has spanned the fall and spring.
UNC (15-1) hosts Wake Forest Friday at 1 p.m. with the winner earning the ACC's automatic bid into the NCAA Tournament field, which will be announced Saturday night.
Matson was honored for the second week in a row. In both cases, she produced a hat trick in an overtime road win. A week earlier, she had all three goals as the Tar Heels won 3-2 in OT at Virginia on April 9. Last weekend, on Sunday at Syracuse, Matson scored the team's second and third goals in regulation and then the gamewinner in overtime in UNC's 4-3 win over the Orange.
Matson has scored 11 of the Tar Heels' 15 goals this spring and assisted on another.
Louisville's Julie Kouijzer earned Defensive Player of the Week honors as the No. 4 Cardinals defeated ninth-ranked Wake Forest 4-1 in their regular season finale on Saturday. The sophomore defender from Amsterdam, Netherlands, helped limit the Demon Deacons to only three shots on goal in the contest.
