Two-Time ACC Coach of the Year
Jan Mann, who has led three collegiate women's golf programs for 25 years, is retiring after serving the last 12 seasons at the helm of the University of North Carolina.
Â
Mann became the head coach of the Tar Heels prior to the 2009-10 season. She also coached eight seasons (1994-2002) at UNCW and five at Virginia (2002-07). She is a two-time Atlantic Coast Conference Coach of the Year (2005 at Virginia and 2011 at Carolina) and led UNC to an ACC title in 2011. Mann also was the Big South Coach of the Year in 2002.
Â
"While it is bittersweet to announce my retirement, I am looking forward to spending more time with my family, and I am excited for the future of our golf program," says Mann. "I want to thank Carolina for the opportunity to be a part of such a great university, Bubba Cunningham and the entire athletic department for their leadership and support and most of all my student-athletes throughout the years who have allowed me to be a small part of their journey."
Â
Mann has led the Tar Heels to 10 NCAA Tournament appearances, advancing to the NCAA Championship round four times. UNC tied for eighth in 2011, 10th in 2012, 14th in 2016 and ninth in 2017.
Â
Her UNC teams won six tournament titles and players won five individual titles, including Catherine O'Donnell's win in the 2014 NCAA West Regional.
Â
"Coach Mann has been a devoted teacher and mentor to student-athletes for more than a quarter of a century, and we appreciate her dedicated service to her teams, universities and the game of golf," says Director of Athletics Bubba Cunningham. "Her student-athletes always represented Carolina in the highest standards in the classroom and on the golf course. Our best wishes to Jan and her family for a peaceful and enjoyable time ahead with family and friends."
Â
Under Mann's direction, Carolina set school records for low team round (278), team round vs. par (-10), 54-hole team tournament score (838), 54-hole team tournament score vs. par (-26), individual 54-hole tournament score (205) and individual 54-hole tournament score vs. par (-11).
Â
Mann's players earned 16 All-ACC honors times (10 at UNC) and 38 Academic All-ACC honors (18 at UNC). Her players earned three All-America selections and 27 Women's Golf Coaches Association's All-America Scholar honors (11 at UNC).
Â
Mann was the head coach at UNCW, her alma mater, from 1994-2002, taking the Seahawks to NCAA regional play for the first time in school history in 1998. They won the 2002 Big South Conference title.
Â
She was the first head coach at Virginia, launching the program in 2002, and led the Cavaliers to an NCAA Tournament appearance in just the second year, finishing 13th in 2005. Leah Wigger won the first of her three All-America honors and was the national runner-up that season.Â
Â
Mann is a past member of the NCAA Division I Golf Committee, which she chaired in 2003-04.
In 2003, she coached the United States team in the U.S.-Japan Matches. She was on the NGCA Board of Directors from 2005-07, the LPGA Coaches Advisory Committee from 2003-07 and the USGA Intercollegiate Relations Committee from 2003-05.
Â
Mann began her career as teaching professional before becoming a college coach, including the director at the Pinehurst Golf School and Teaching Center and stints in Point Clear, Ala., and Wilmington. She was chosen one of Golf Digest's Top Teachers in North Carolina in 2000 and 2001.
