Thompson Records Three Hits In 8-1 Loss To Miami

CHAPEL HILL – After clinching the series with a doubleheader sweep on Friday, North Carolina (20-17, 14-13) fell to Miami (22-13, 13-12) 8-1 on Sunday afternoon on Bryson Field at Boshamer Stadium.
Thompson continued his tear at the plate, going three-for-four with a double. In his last 10 contests, he is 14-for-35 with a double, two home runs and nine RBI.
In the bottom of the first inning, Thompson hit a double through the left side and scored on Serretti's RBI single. The Heels took an early 1-0 lead over Miami.
The Hurricanes broke through in the second inning with a two-RBI single to left center, followed by a two-run home run over the right field fence. Miami seized a 4-1 lead after the second.
The Heels had two runners on base with singles by Angel Zarate and Justice Thompson in the bottom of the third but were unable to capitalize.
After the second, the game was scoreless until the Hurricanes hit a two-RBI double to right center in the top of the seventh. The next Miami batter followed with an RBI double. Miami's lead extended to 7-1.
In the ninth inning, Miami scored their eighth run of the game on a sacrifice fly, pushing the lead to 8-1.
Chris Joyner started for the Heels and pitched for 1.2 innings, allowing four runs on five hits. Gage Gillian pitched for 2.0 innings and did not allow a hits and struck out one batter. Caleb Cozart pitched for 2.1 innings, with five hits, two runs and no strikeouts.
Cannon Pickell pitched the full ninth inning, recording one run on one hit and one strikeout.
North Carolina is back in action to face Charlotte on Tuesday, April 27 at 6 p.m. at Boshamer Stadium.
