April 30, 2021 | Women's Soccer
MATTHEWS, N.C. – Rachael Dorwart guided No. 2 North Carolina (16-1-0) over Denver (17-3-1) in the second round of the NCAA tournament with an assist and a second-half goal.
A 41-minute goal from Abby Allen highlighted the first half of play between the Tar Heels and the Pioneers. After much back-and-forth action, Paige Tolentino served the ball into the box on a free kick and after hitting off Dorwart's head, Allen finished for her third goal of the season.
The beginning of the match featured both sides pressing, but neither squad could capitalize on an opportunity. The Tar Heels had back-to-back corners at the 11-minute mark and a shot on goal from Rachel Jones, but each time the Pioneer defense stood stout.
Dorwart added a goal to her first-half assist in the 70th minute with her first goal of the season. After collecting a header off of her chest, she powered through a Denver defender and finished a loose ball to give the Tar Heels insurance.
Carolina continued to pressure the Denver goal and collected 12 second half shots, compared the five in the opening period.
The Tar Heels ended with 17-6 shot advantage and took eight corner kicks compared to Denver's two.
With the win, the Tar Heels advance to the third round of the NCAA Tournament and will play to winner of Saint Louis and Washington. Regardless of opponent, Carolina will be back on the pitch on May 5 at Wake Med Park in Cary, N.C.
