May 14, 2021 | Men's Soccer
CARY, N.C.—Jamil Roberts scored in the 60th minute to lift Marshall to a 1-0 win over North Carolina in the NCAA College Cup semifinals on Friday night at Sahlen's Stadium at WakeMed Soccer Park.
Marshall took the lead at the 59:37 mark when Roberts scored off assists from Vitor Dias and Milo Yosef on the Thundering Herd's only official shot of the game.
The Tar Heels had more than one close scoring opportunity in the final 30 minutes but could not find the back of the net.
Five minutes after Marshall's goal, a shot by UNC's Giovanni Montesdeoca hit the crossbar. In the 81st minute, Joe Pickering drilled a shot from 20 yards out that went just over the crossbar.
The Thundering Herd moves on to Monday's NCAA championship game to play the winner of Friday's second semifinal between Indiana and Pitt.
The Tar Heels were making their ninth appearance in the NCAA College Cup, including their seventh in the last 13 years and their fourth under head coach Carlos Somoano (2011, 2016, 2017, 2020).
The two teams clawed to a scoreless first half, with UNC outshooting the Thundering Herd, 6-0 and putting four of those shots on goals. Marshall's Oliver Semmle made four first-half saves.
Alec Smir went the distance in goal for Carolina.
The Tar Heels played without freshman Akeim Clarke, who received two second-half yellow cards in UNC's win over Wake Forest in the quarterfinal round and was forced to sit out a game as a result.
Carolina out-shot Marshall, 11-1, in the game.
