Ferner Earns All-ACC Honors
The University of North Carolina's varsity four won the Petite Final to highlight action for the Tar Heels on race finals day at the 2021 Atlantic Coast Conference Rowing Championship at Lake Hartwell in Clemson, S.C.
Â
Coxswain Isabelle McGimsey directed the efforts of Gigi Maroney, Kate Burgess, Jackie Wilhelm, Jessica Judge to traverse the 2k course in 7:58.10 to edge Miami and Boston College for the win.
Â
Lauren Ferner, a senior from Corning, N.Y., and a member of Carolina's varsity eight, earned second-team All-ACC honors.
Â
"Lauren came to us a diamond in the rough as a freshman and she's just now starting to see the results of her hard work," says co-interim head coach Emilie Gross. "Fern's had an uphill battle to get to where she is now, and I am so proud to see her honored among the best rowers in the ACC."
Â
Virginia won all five Grand Finals and won the ACC Championship with 99 points. Duke and Syracuse placed second and third, respectively. Carolina was ninth with 19 points.
Â
"We had another perfect day for racing and our V4 brought a lot of excitement by winning their B Final," says co-interim head coach Thomas Revelle. "All our boats gained valuable experience and our freshmen and sophomores got to race at a championship regatta for the first time. They will learn from what they saw and hopefully carry some motivation from today into building fitness on their own over the summer.
Â
"Our overall results today were disappointing, but I am proud of the way each individual, boat, and team grew over the course of the season. Our long-term goal is to be faster, but right now we want to pause and celebrate the commitment and dedication of our athletes, particularly our seniors. They have experienced adversity and challenges with grace and they're helping build a foundation for future success. It has been a tremendous personal honor to coach at Carolina and I have high expectations for the future of Carolina Rowing."
Â
Carolina's day two results include:

"Thank you to the seniors for leading this group into unknown territory and leaving so much to build off. Congratulations to our young 4's group who led the way for us this weekend.
