Women's Soccer Advances To 30th College Cup With 1-0 Win Over Texas A&M
May 9, 2021 | Women's Soccer
CARY, N.C. – North Carolina (18-1-0) advanced to its 30th College Cup with a 1-0 win over No. 13 Texas A&M (14-4-1) at WakeMed Soccer Park on Sunday afternoon.
Rachel Dorwart's late first-half goal lifted the Tar Heels over the Aggies on Mother's Day and improved Carolina's record to 18-1-0 overall. UNC has now won its last seven contests.
The Tar Heels put the first shot of the match just wide in the fifth minute when Talia Dellaperuta fired an attempt left of the net. The Tar Heels followed with an opportunity after a corner kick, but the shot was blocked.
Texas A&M had a chance just after the 10-minute mark when a corner kick sailed in front of the Tar Heel's net, but Claudia Dickey jumped and snatched the ball out of the air which squandered any chance the Aggies had after the pass.
Dickey made a magnificent save in the 23rd minute when she dove to her left to make the play. The Aggie's shot was headed for the upper-90, but Dickey made her first save of the afternoon to keep the score even.
Rachel Jones and Brianna Pinto each had chances at the net midway through the first half, but neither could connect. Jones missed high on an opportunity in front of the net before Pinto spun and fired a shot that just missed the crossbar from the '18.
The Tar Heels converted in the 43rd minute after a breakaway, when Rachel Dorwart scored her second goal of the season. She collected the ball from Hallie Klanke, fired from just inside the box, and buried the shot in the bottom-left of the net.
North Carolina continued to apply pressure in the second half and recorded a shot on goal in the 55th minute when Pinto fired the ball into the hands of the Aggie goalkeeper.
Gambone followed Pinto with a shot of her own.
The Tar Heel's back line created a vice on the Aggie offense and allowed just one second-half shot. Carolina outshot the Aggies 7-4 and hold a 300-117 shot advantage against opponents this season.
Dickey recorded her seventh-straight clean sheet and 15th overall, which leads the country.
Carolina is back on the pitch on Thursday at WakeMed Soccer Park against the winner of Clemson and Santa Clara.
