June 15, 2021 | Field Hockey
For the third year in a row, the Tar Heel field hockey staff has been honored as the best in NCAA DI field hockey.
Â
Head coach Karen Shelton, associate head coach Grant Fulton, and assistant coach Robbert Schenk were announced on Tuesday evening by the National Field Hockey Coaches Association as the 2020 NFHCA Division I National Coaching Staff of the Year. The three head a group that also includes performance analyst Chris Fry.
Â
In the extended 2020-21 season, the Tar Heels won a third-consecutive and ninth-overall NCAA Championship, beating Michigan in overtime on their home turf at Karen Shelton Stadium. The May 9th victory capped a campaign that also included the 2020 Atlantic Coast Conference title.
Â
UNC finished the season 19-1 overall and 9-1 in conference play, taking the top spot in the Penn Monto/NFHCA Division I National Coaches Poll each week of the season.
Â
Shelton, the 2020 ACC Coach of the Year, earned her 701st career win on November 6, 2020, to become the all-time winningest coach in NCAA field hockey history.
Â
This is UNC's third-consecutive and fifth-overall NFHCA National Coaching Staff of the Year honor. In May, UNC was named the 2020 NFHCA Division I Co-South Region Coaching Staff of the Year.
