Matson Named NFHCA National Player of the Year
June 17, 2021 | Field Hockey
For the second year in a row, junior Erin Matson has been named National Player of the Year by the National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA). She's the second player in the history of the award – which dates back to 2010 – to win it more than once.
Â
The honor follows a slew of others for the Tar Heel forward, who also repeated as the Honda Sport Award winner and three-peated as the Atlantic Coast Conference Offensive Player of the Year and a first-team All-America selection.
Â
During the extended 2020-21 season, Matson led UNC to the NCAA and ACC Championships and was named MVP of both tournaments.
Â
Through three seasons as a Tar Heel, she ranks second in program history and sixth in ACC history in career points. A media and journalism major from Chadds Ford, Pa., she is just the eighth player in ACC history with more than 200 career points and finished her junior year with 207 career points on 82 goals and 43 assists.
Â
The 2020 NFHCA Division I National Player of the Year was announced live on the NFHCA Awards Show sponsored by AstroTurf on June 15. For a look at past winners, click here.
