Former Tar Heels Shine In Pro League Opening Weekend
July 28, 2021 | Women's Lacrosse
CHAPEL HILL—The new Athletes Unlimited professional women's lacrosse league opened play with its first weekend of action last week, and former University of North Carolina players shined on the field on the inaugural weekend.
Eight former Tar Heel players are participating in the league: Kristen Carr, Marie McCool, Amber McKenzie, Emily Parros, Sammy Jo Tracy, Caroline Wakefield, Caylee Waters and Kayla Wood. Former Tar Heel assistant coach Katrina Dowd and former volunteer assistant Sarah Brown also are playing.
The top four players become captains each week and draft their teams from scratch for following week's games. In the league's scoring system, every player can lose or win points during every game. Athletes score points as individuals and as a team to win MVP titles and cash bonuses.
Wood, a defender, is the league's overall leader on the individual leaderboard with 501 points after the opening week of action, five points better than Kayla Treanor. As one of the top four, Wood will have the first pick in the draft for next week's games.
Other Tar Heels on the leaderboard include No. 10 Wakefield (353 points), No. 16 Waters (331), No. 17 McCool (315), No. 18 Carr (294), No. 24 Tracy (246), No. 26 McKenzie (242) and No. 32 Parros (214).
