August 19, 2021 | Women's Soccer
CHAPEL HILL – Fueled by a brace from freshman Ruby Grant, No. 3 North Carolina powered past No. 19 Washington 4-1 to open its season at Dorrance Field on Thursday evening.
UNC students showed out for the first home athletic event on campus of the 2021-22 academic year, as they roared for each Carolina goal.
The Tar Heels jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the 11th minute of the contest when freshman Emily Murphy netted Carolina's first goal of the adolescent season and first of her career.
Murphy found the ball at point-blank range after Rachel Jones pushed the ball into the middle of the net to give the Tar Heels the initial lead of the match.
Carolina extended its lead to 2-0 in the 32nd minute when Isabel Cox found Ruby Grant 14 yards out for her first goal of the evening. The pass went from right-to-left to Grant, who buried the ball into the back-left of the net.
Washington cut North Carolina's lead in half just before the break with its lone goal in the 44th minute.
Cox displayed impressive control with the ball in the 61st minute after she finessed her way past the Washington keeper after collecting a lob from the other side of the pitch. After three touches on the ball, she slotted home her first goal of the season and 10th of her career.
Grant finished a penalty kick in the 75th minute to give Carolina its final three-goal lead. She striped the ball into the bottom-left side of the net after Rachael Dorwart drew a foul in the box.
The Tar Heels return to action against No. 13 Arkansas on Sunday at Dorrance Field. The match is set to begin at 1 p.m.
