CHAPEL HILL—Another weekend saw another set of stellar performances by former University of North Carolina players in the Athletes Unlimited professional women's lacrosse league.
Despite weather complications and delays, former Tar Heels again shined at the highest level from July 30-August 1 in the new league, among the best players the sport has to offer.
Kayla Wood, a 2021 UNC graduate who started for the 20-1 Carolina team this past Spring, continued her standout campaign and remained undefeated after the first two weeks of play. She will serve as a team captain for the third consecutive week as a result of her efforts.
Brian Logue of USA Lacrosse Magazine summarized Wood's stellar professional debut:
Wood isn't the only former Carolina star whose game is translating seamlessly to the professional ranks.
A few highlights:
• Sammy Jo Tracy (UNC '17) posted a hat trick and Marie McCool (UNC '18) had two goals and two assists for Team Arsenault in its Sunday loss to Team Wood.
• Goalkeeper Caylee Waters (UNC '17) made nine saves, including five in the decisive second half, in Saturday's win for Team Arsenault over Team Treanor.
• McCool had a goal and added two assists in Friday's win for Team Arsenault over Team Warden.
• Emily Parros tallied a game-high six points on three goals and three assists while adding five ground balls and four draw controls on Friday for Team Treanor in a loss to Team Wood.
Tar Heels ranked on the Athletes Unlimited individual points leaderboard include No. 1 Wood (defender, 812 points), No. 7 Waters (goalkeeper, 661), No. 12 Caroline Wakefield (defender, 611), No. 15 McCool (midfielder, 581), No. 27 Tracy (attacker, 456), No. 30 Parros (midfielder, 439), No. 32 Kristen Carr (defender, 418) and No. 39 Amber McKenzie (defender, 382).
The Week Three team draft will be held on Monday night with league action resuming in Maryland on Friday August 6.
