Colton's Brace Powers No. 2 Women's Soccer Over Illinois, 5-1
August 26, 2021 | Women's Soccer
The match was the first played at Demirjian Park, Illinois' state-of-the-art facility completed over the summer.
Illinois took the initial lead in the fourth minute of the game after the Illini looped a ball over the head of Claudia Dickey to take a 1-0 lead.
Just a minute later, Emily Murphy answered on the counter attack when Libby Moore sailed a ball over the Illinois defense before Murphy slotted the ball into the back-left of the Illinois net to even the match.

Maycee Bell headed the ball to the right-side of the net in the 18th minute off of a free kick from Rachel Jones but the Illini keeper made the diving save to preserve the tie.
Bell finished a ball off of her shin inside of the box for her first goal of the season and one that gave the Tar Heels their first lead of the evening. Avery Patterson played the ball into the box before Bell poked it into the back of the net.
The Tar Heels extended their lead to two goals in the 36th minute when Paige Tolentino played a beautiful cross from left-to-right to Rachael Dorwart, who headed the ball into the back of the net.

Six minutes later, Murphy found Colton again to put the Tar Heels up by four goals. The goal marked Colton's first brace of her career.
Colton's brace was Carolina's second of the season, with Ruby Grant scoring two goals against Washington in the season-opener.
