No. 2 Tar Heels Blank Northwestern 2-0

CHAPEL HILL – No. North Carolina's (5-0) defense led the Tar Heels to a 2-0 victory over Northwestern on Thursday evening at Dorrance Field.
Claudia Dickey and the Tar Heels' backline allowed just one shot, the fewest against the Tar Heels since Belmont recorded zero on November 16, 2019.
Carolina jumped out to a 1-0 lead in 17th minute when Rachael Dorwart finished a free kick from Avery Patterson inside the six-yard box. The goal was Dorwart's third in as many games.
After much back-and-forth action from the backend of the first half to midway through the second, the Tar Heels put significantly more pressure on the Northwestern later in the game.
Rachel Jones gave the Tar Heels the 2-0 lead in the 86th minute when Emily Murphy beat a defender and found Jones with an open net. The goal was Jones's first of the season and 13th of her career.
Just a minute later, Emily Moxley struck the post with a rocket off her foot. With Northwestern taking more chances late in the contest, UNC was able to put 10 second-half shots on the scoreboard.
Dickey recorded her third clean sheet of the season, which leads the ACC. The Tar Heels outshot Northwestern 17-1 and led 7-to-0 in corner kicks.
The Tar Heels advanced to 47-3-2 in its last 52 matches.
UNC returns to action on Sunday (Sept. 5) against No. 10 Stanford.
