Men's Soccer Picks Up Win At Virginia, 2-0

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va.— North Carolina was able to pick up a 2-0 win over Virginia on Saturday afternoon, marking their first Atlantic Coast Conference win of the season.
Following a tough loss to Duke last weekend, the Tar Heels improved their record to 5-2-1 this season, and 1-2 in conference play. Virginia falls to 2-5-1, 0-3.
Carolina was ranked No. 11 in the Top Drawer Soccer poll and No. 20 by College Soccer News. Virginia was unranked.
The Tar Heels came out aggressive, taking two shots within the first ten minutes. Holden Brown, Virginia's goalkeeper, made his first save of the game when Santiago Herrera took a shot into the bottom right of the goal for North Carolina's third shot in 13 minutes.
Carolina out-shot Virginia, 6-4, in the opening 45 minutes. Alec Smir and Virginia's Holden Brown each earned 2 saves to keep the game scoreless through the first half.
North Carolina was finally able to find the back of the net in the 78th minute to give them a 1-0 advantage over Virginia.
A corner kick by senior Milo Garvanian went to Herrera who flicked the ball toward the center of the box, making contact with the arm of UVA's Jules Anderson right in front of the goal.
Herrera scored on resulting the penalty kick.
Only six minutes later, Alex Rose advanced the UNC lead to 2-0. In the 84th minute, a UVA player headed the ball backwards, but Rose was able to take possession and create and score on a breakaway opportunity.
In the game, UNC out-shot Virginia, 15-7. North Carolina was also able to take 10 corner kicks, compared to the one allowed by Virginia.
Alec Smir was able to secure his fifth shut-out win of the season with three saves.
The Tar Heels are back in action against UNC Wilmington on Wednesday September 29 at 7 p.m. in Wilmington, N.C.
