Record Weekend Earns ACC Honors for Matson
September 7, 2021 | Field Hockey
GREENSBORO, N.C. – The top offensive player in North Carolina field hockey history has been named Atlantic Coast Conference Field Hockey Offensive Player of the Week. Senior forward Erin Matson, who on Sunday became UNC's career leader in points and goals, has won the first conference weekly honor of the 2021 season.
Louisville's Julie Kouijzer earned Defensive Player of the Week honors.
Matson, from Chadds Ford, Pa., opened a record-setting weekend by assisting on two goals in the Tar Heels' 4-1 road win at No. 13 Princeton on Friday. On Sunday, still playing in Princeton, she scored four goals and added two assists to total 10 points in UNC's 9-1 win over Penn.
With Sunday's flurry, Matson became Carolina's career leader in both points and goals, passing Cindy Werley, a fellow two-time Honda Award winner and Pennsylvania product who played for the Tar Heels from 1993-97. Following her 12-point weekend, Matson now has 87 career goals and 221 points early in her fourth collegiate season.
Next up for UNC (2-2) is a third consecutive weekend on the road. The Tar Heels, ranked No. 4 in this week's national poll, play at No. 17 Saint Joseph's on Friday and at Drexel on Sunday. Their first home game of the season is Sept. 19 against Miami (Ohio).
