Swain Joins Carolina Volleyball Team
January 13, 2022 | Volleyball
CHAPEL HILL – Head volleyball coach Joe Sagula is pleased to announce the addition of Ava Swain to the Carolina volleyball team. Swain, a mid-year freshman enrollee, will compete for the Tar Heels starting during the fall 2022 season.
"We're excited to have Ava joining us," Sagula said.
"She has a bright future. Getting this early start to training this spring will help her be well-prepared for the season ahead. She's a solid pin hitter, with well-rounded skills who also comes with a strong work ethic. She's dedicated to her athletics and high-level academics. We see her contributing as a strong attacker and defender. Ava's high-level of competitiveness helped lead Berkley Prep to a national ranking in 2021. She is also the No. 62 ranked player in the 2022 class. There is a great future for her in Chapel Hill."
A six-year letter winner at Berkley Preparatory School, Swain was an outside hitter for Justeen Coulson. The 2021 all-state selection was also named the FACA Player of the Year for Hillsborough County. Also named to the 2021 AVCA High School All-American First Team, Swain played for the club team OTVA Orlando under coach Felix Viera.
"I chose Carolina because it has the perfect balance between volleyball, academics and a social life," Swain said. "The culture of the volleyball program is something that you cannot find anywhere else in the country, and I couldn't have dreamed of ending up at a better place."
A Tampa, Fla., native, Swain is the daughter of Deborah and David Swain, and has one younger sister, Shea. Father, David, was an offensive lineman on the University of Florida football team from 1990-1994. Swain plans on majoring in media and journalism at Carolina with the goal of becoming a sports reporter or announcer.
