Shaffmaster, Wurl Represent Carolina Volleyball On All-ACC Academic Team

Karenna Wurl and Mabrey Shaffmaster were both named to the 2021 Volleyball All-Atlantic Coast Conference Academic Team, the ACC announced Tuesday.

Wurl, a junior from San Diego, Calif., is majoring in media and journalism and is making her second appearance on the All-ACC Academic Team. A libero, Wurl led the ACC in digs per set (4.35) in conference play in 2021. In 24 starts for the Tar Heels, she racked up 350 digs, 21 service aces and 97 assists.

Shaffmaster, the 2021 ACC Freshman of the Year, is majoring in exercise and sport science. An outside hitter, the New Castle, Ind., native, tallied 389 kills in her rookie campaign, the most of any freshman in the conference and the eighth-most overall. Also named the AVCA East Coast Region Freshman of the Year, Shaffmaster totaled 250 digs, 32 blocks, 30 service aces and 29 assists, appearing in all 30 matches for Carolina.

Minimum academic requirements for selection to the All-ACC Academic Team are a 3.0 grade point average for the previous semester and a 3.0 cumulative average during one's academic career. Athletic achievements during the most recent season are also considered in selecting the All-ACC Academic Team.

Louisville's Amaya Tillman and Pitt's Serena Gray were selected as the 2021 ACC Co-Scholar Athletes of the Year.
